...I thought we could use a break from the usual, but since it has a potential for heated discussion, I thought I'd put it here instead of at "BLAH, BLAH, BLAH"

Which of the two following statements (if any) would you agree with, and why?

1) You are what you do

2) You are what you think

what you do will be revealed in moments of stress no matter how hard you try to fake it.

that's why we have psychometric testing before employing people these days. Behaviours can changed, and thats what we try to do in counselling employees, but innate beliefs, attitudes and feelings are very difficult to change (unless you have an epiphany) and that is what makes us who we are. These are revealed during crisis, mob situations, moments of stress.

What you think ultimately determines what you do.

Ah but Debbie that is YOUR belief! hahahahhahahahaha Beliefs are EASY to change if you believe it is.

It is what you THINK it is.

Back to Dreamtone7, you are BOTH what you DO and what you THINK.

It takes THOUGHTS to lead to ACTION. Only the retarded can claim they didn't think before they did something.....

And of course that's just MY belief! hahahahahhahahahahaha

I agree for the most part with Deb. Except for reflex action (and other involuntary action/reaction), everything you do must start with a thought process. Even that which we call "heart" (not the actual organ itself) is located in the brain/thought-process. It's our brains that make us who we are. That which we are is what we are...that which we do is what we do. Didn't somebody once say, "I think, therefore I am."? They didn't say, "I do, therefore I am."

That would be Descartes, who's philosophy (je pense donc je suis) related to life. Existence. "I am" as in "being alive".

Not "I think, therefore I am a lumberjack"

Try extrapolating a little, Galmin. You know...take a step outside the mental box once in awhile? ;)

There's a scorpion that needs to get across a river. The frog can carry him but is afraid to be stung. So the scorpion promises that he won't sting the frog, because if he did they would both drown and what would be the point in that? That makes sense, so the frog agrees, the scorpion gets on his back, and the frog starts swimming across the river. Halfway across the scorpion stings him. As they're both going down the frog gasps out, 'what did you do that for, now we're both going to die!' And the scorpion replies, 'I cannot help it, it's my character.'
