Well let's see, we just extended the tour of troops scheduled to come home an extra two months besides sending another 12,000. Over 1100 are dead, probably 10 times that amount with injuries, many who will never lead a normal life again and all you've got to say is this???

I'm a nobody, just an average guy who works for a living like everyone else but people seem to like me generally. But that's neither here or there. The question is, how many American casulities are you willing to accept before your opinion begins to waver??? (We'll leave the Iraqi casualities out just to keep this simple for you..)

One unit, the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division, is being extended for the second time. Its soldiers originally were told they would be going home in November at the end of a 10-month assignment, but in October they got the news they would remain until mid-January. Now they are being extended until mid-March.

Rumsfeld's decision also applies to:

_About 4,400 troops of the 2nd Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division, which is operating in north-central Iraq. They will stay until mid-March, instead of departing in early January. Those soldiers' home bases are mostly in Hawaii.

_About 2,300 members of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, based in Okinawa, Japan, Hawaii and California, who will stay until mid-March instead of leaving in January.

_About 160 soldiers of the 66th Transportation Company, based in Germany. They were due to depart Iraq in early January but instead will stay until early March.

The Army generally relies upon the 82nd Airborne to keep one of its three brigades on short-notice alert year-round to deploy abroad if there is a crisis. Shortly before the October elections in Afghanistan, about 600 members of the 82nd Airborne were sent there to strengthen security.

Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., a critic of the administration's handling of the war, said the Pentagon's announcement confirmed that the effort to stabilize Iraq would take years, with no certainty of success.

"This announcement makes it clear that commanders in Iraq need more troops and that this will be a long and very expensive process for the United States," Reed said. "It is still not clear whether Iraq will emerge from this chronic violence as a viable and stable country."

One can never adequately evaluate the cost when one has not discussed what has been purchased.

By your reasoning, sterling, we should have let Saddam go on terrorizing and killing thousands of his own people...I guess those lost lives, along with the potential lost lives, didn't make it into your equation, somehow.

Jeebus Sterling no offense but look you twit... The injured are no where near 10 tmes. I know because i live almost with in walkin distance toi Walter Reed Hospital and have a neighbor who visits the wounded. He has a Purple Heart from Nam.

Casualties? You are too funny. My wife's grand father was killed in ww1 at Verdun (sp?) France where there were 750,000 casualties. The first day of the D Day Invasione? 3500... I can not remember which battle it was maybe Gettysburg? oh It was the 4 battles around I thonk Stafford VA was over 100,000....

Not that any casualty is good, no it is bad but these casualties are lower than the murder rate of Washington DC...

much lower than New York or Los Angeles....

Do I agree with everything? No, but the Hutus and Tutsies killed hundreds of thousands (or vice cerca) and the UN did nothing...

as far as extending tours etc.... did anyone believe we would be there a few months only?

there were 4 battled around stafford, va (i know because i was at the battlefiels last week) about 50-70 miles south of washington... over 100,000 casualties- 85,000 wounded 15,000 killed.

viet nam had over 200,000 killed and wounded...
