just because they did not have a uniform on does not mean they were innocent civilians. better than red phosforous and better them than us!!!

No...certainly not tanks. Except for special munitions (like "Daisy-Cutters"), post WWII penetrating bombs were developed mainly for nuclear missle silos and other such places where these missiles might be kept. (The Soviets often used tunnels in mountains during the early cold-war days.) Only some, such as the BLU-119 (a 2,000 pound bomb), use heavy-metal warheads though...most do not. I believe the BLU-119 was developed in the late 80's. The idea with the BLU-119 was to get a lighter bomb with a smaller yield warhead with the same penetrating capability as a 5,000 pounder. It doesn't quite make it, but will still cut through 15 feet. The 5,000 pounder will cut through 20 feet like butter. BTW, no BLU-119s were used in Iraq. I do believe two of the 5,000 pounders were, though. These deep penetrating munitions were used much more extensively in the mountains of Afghanistan in attempts to take out Osama and Co. holed up in caves under the mountains. I don't know if any BLU-119s were used there.

Oops...my bad. It's the BLU-116...not the BLU-119 that has the heavy-metal in it. And it was developed in the mid-90's. (Was doing some reading up on it.)

The BLU-119 Warhead? What about the BLU-109 or the MK 84? They're all mounted on the GBU 31 (guided by some KMU-5**(insert partnumber) kit).

Is the BLU-109 or MK 84 a heavy metal unit aswell? In that case we'll probably never know if it was used in Iraq, since the Navy has a habit of never telling what they shoot of how much (a quite irritating habit

).

Anyway, the DOD estimates about 10.000 HDBTs (hard deeply buried targets) worldwide.

I guess we've now concluded that a TANK is not the only target for a DU weapon?

You could be right...I found I was looking at Gulf War stats. But "GBU-24" by itself means nothing. It's just the designation of the guidance package. That guidance package is also associated with the BLU-109 which has no heavy-metals involved. The BLU-116 was designed with the same shape/size/flight-characteristics as the BLU-109 so that it could utilize the same guidance packages. I'll have to look into things further...when I'm less tired.

Ah. Ok. That means the BLU-116 technically could be fitted with: AGM-130, GBU-10, GBU-15, GBU-24, GBU-27 and the GBU-31 (as JDAM).

GBU-15/AGM-130 series, GBU-24 and GBU-27. I don't think it's set up for JDAM...but not sure.
