Funny....every single person over here that I come in contact with says the EXACT same thing about Old Europe's position.

:lslow

Imagine that.

Israel and EU fail to heal rift

BBC/London, 22 July, 2004, 16:55 GMT 17:55 UK

Israel and the European Union have failed to resolve a row over Israel's controversial barrier in the West Bank.

High-level talks in Tel Aviv came against a backdrop of Israeli anger at international opposition to the barrier, which EU countries share.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said he doubted if Israel could trust Europe any longer as a negotiating partner.

But EU envoy Javier Solana spoke of balancing Israel's security needs with the humanitarian needs of Palestinians.

The EU voted as a bloc last Tuesday in favour of a UN General Assembly resolution calling for the removal of the barrier, following a ruling by the International Court of Justice that it was illegal.

Israel has reacted strongly to the vote. It says the proposed 640km system of fences and walls is necessary for security.

"I find myself challenged to convince the Israeli people that the European Union is a partner we can trust," Mr Shalom said at the joint news conference.

Mr Solana said the EU had made clear long ago its opposition to the barrier because it cuts through occupied Palestinian land.

"A country has the right to build a fence on its own territory but we believe the route of this fence is contrary to international law," Mr Solana said.

Israel has long sought to sideline the EU and UN, which it views as biased, from Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking efforts, favouring the mediation of the US.

The U.S. should "mediate" and the rift between Israel, the U.S. and Europe will be even stronger.

That sounds good to me. It's the first time I've read anything in this thread about anybody giving a rip about Israeli security. Everyone seems to enjoy skirting the issue that THE WALL WORKS!!! It SAVES LIVES!!! It may make life rough for some of the Palestinians...but they need to change their ways if they expect the wall to come down. But no...the europeans are just concerned with having things their way and continuing to feed into the "Palestinian nation" lie that most of them have bought. Perish the thought that they may be wrong and aren't big enough to admit it...or is there another reason they want the wall to come down? Hmmm??? Sorry boys and girls...this is not "Burger King"...you're not going to have it your way, and I agree with it. The wall will stay, and lives will be saved in spite of european wishes to the contrary.

They need to get over themselves...people tend to pay less and less attention to what europe has to say because they're so blatantly "out-to-lunch" on this issue. Is it "Wall Phobia" maybe?

Say what? As soon as palestinians STOP blowing up innocent Israeli women and children at bus stops, border crossings, and cafes, then MAYBE I will start to care about their "humanitarian" needs. Who the hell are you trying to kid? Humanitarian needs. Sheesh.

Of course not. I am sure it saves lives. It would save lives just as good if it was built on Israeli soil alone.

As it is now, it looks like a landgrab in the guise of a safetybarrier.

I'm not so sure about that. Look at a map of the wall now, and where it would be if it was built on what you (and some in the UN) are calling "Israeli soil". I don't think it would be as effective.

Do you mean the 150 nations that voted for a ban when you say "some in the UN"? You can as easily say "the vast majority".

Why wouldn't it be effective? Because the illegal settlements would have to be abandoned for it to be as optimum of efficiency?

Illegal according to who? The UN? It wouldn't be the first time in history that the majority were in error. Time to wake up from the "Palestinian nation" lie. Palestine is not a nation...they have no voice in the UN because of this. They cannot even lodge a complaint.

So whose land is it then that you say Israel is encroching apon? It's land they they used to inhabit...but the UN wanted to appease the Arabs and it "gave" (because you cannot give something to somebody that they already own) Israel only part of their own land to them. That was the first mistake. Now the Arabs are laughing it up as a non-nation is causing Israel so much trouble. The Arabs know that that land belongs to Israel...they're just laughing at the world for the lie it has swollowed. The Palestinians are squatters on somebody elses land...they are like gypsies that have no land of their own. But the world largely, including, apparently you, Galmin, now believes that this land that they inhabit now belongs to them.

How about I round up a group of people to squat on the land where you live? Then maybe I can convince the world it belongs to me and become justified in terrorist attacks against you and your family. Is this making the situation a little more clear for you?
