The French are publically embarressed by the level of anti-semitism in their country and lash out at anyone, including Sharon, who calls attention to it. Why else would the French government even care?

France angered by Sharon's call
Government officials and Jewish leaders in France have criticised Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon for calling on all French Jews to move to Israel.
Mr Sharon said moving was a "must" because of a rising number of anti-Semitic attacks in France.
France's foreign ministry said it had asked Israel for an explanation of the "unacceptable comments".
Mr Sharon urged French Jews to move to Israel because of anti-Semitism, but Israel has also encouraged Jewish immigration to Israel for demographic reasons.
If the current population trends continue, it is estimated that Jews will be outnumbered by non-Jews in the territory that Israel controls within 10 to 15 years.
French politicians have been outraged by the comments.
The president of the national assembly, Jean-Louis Debre, said Mr Sharon "missed a good opportunity to keep quiet".
These words are inadmissible, unacceptable and, furthermore, irresponsible," he told Europe 1 radio.
Jacques Myard, a member of France's foreign affairs committee, said Mr Sharon appeared to be trying to divert attention from his own problems in Israel.
"I am really scandalised by this call," he said.
French Jews have also found Mr Sharon's comments unhelpful.
French rabbi Gabriel Farhi said he was surprised.
He said he thought Mr Sharon must have been expressing his personal feelings.
"It is definitely not the feeling of the Israeli state and definitely not that of the French Jewish community," he told BBC Radio Four's Today programme.
"We think we have reason to worry now in France but we don't have to move to Israel. We don't feel it is a must."
Mr Sharon acknowledged that the Paris government had made efforts to tackle the problem but still said his advice to French Jews was that moving to Israel was "a must and they have to move immediately".
Correspondents say this is not the first time that Mr Sharon has spoken about the need for French Jews to leave for Israel, but rarely has he been so blunt.
They say there is irritation in France at the idea that life for Jews there is becoming dangerous - especially as the government has made every effort to show that anti-Jewish acts will be severely punished.
A week ago President Jacques Chirac rushed to condemn an apparently anti-Semitic attack on a Paris train that turned out to be a hoax.
His haste only aggravated passions among many in the Muslim community who feel they are the instant scapegoats, observers say.

Mike - "Yep...[Sharon] definitely knows how to destroy support for the "Israeli cause" and how to p-off rather reasonable people and politicians."
Mike - "To blame France for "anti-semitism" is just bizarre."
"Reasonable" is not a word I would associate with France at all. They have a reputation in most of the world for being concerned with nobody but themselves...until it's time to bail them out again. They used to participate in NATO wargames and exercises during the Cold War, but refused to join NATO...all the benefits with none of the responsibility. That's France. If they thought it was in their own best interest to be "anti-semitic", they wouldn't think twice about it.

As a matter of fact I do not support snail-eating like the French do! LOL
However I can say that I know from my own experience
(France is 45 minutes by car from where I live and I have
friends with French wives living here) that France itself is not
a "anti-semitic" country. By far not, especially considering
that the 3rd. biggest Jewish population living outside of Israel
is living in France.
It's a geographical fact that France is having a south-west
coast at one end of Europe at the Mediterranean sea. That's
where people from Algeria, Morocco and other muslim
dominated countries arrive, plus Algerians and Moroccans do
have FRENCH as their administrative language (ex-colonies).
To blame the French, who face rather a Muslim immigrant
problem themselves (Marseille for example doesn't look like
a French city anymore), for "anti-semitism" is bizarre
After Germany, France is (was) one of the biggest supporters
of Jewsish communities and Israel. Sharon is about to destroy
the relations with the biggest Israel supporters in Europe IMHO
Foremost Sharon and his cronies should let it be to mix into
the relations of other nations, additionally he should get
better counselling and some medical treatment.
As unjust as Sharons remarks towards France were, as unjust
he is talking about the world court antio-barrier ruling.
In all statements I heard and read from Sharon and from
Israeli officials regarding their 'condemnation' of the world
court ruling (i.e. they speak of a "shameful decision" HAHA)
I do NOT hear and see any mentioning of the fact, that the
world court urges Israel to deconstruct the barrier on
OCCUPIED land. It is explicitely mentioned in the world court
order, that Israel is granted a right for self-defense and a
right to build a barrier on their own soil. Israel will not be
allowed to create a new self determined borderline against
the U.N. resolutions of the past and will not be allowed to
take away the RIGHT of the Palestinian nation for their own
land under the conditions described in previous U.N.
resolutions.. That's what the fuzz is about and Sharon and his
cronies make a huge laugh number out of the state of Israel if
they try to perform their usual wish-wash tactics of the past.
That's now different and the absolutely unneccessary
creation of anger and outrage in France and other European
countries by Sharon's insane speeches will lead to a much
stronger handling of Israel and a dramatic decrease of Israeli
support within the European Union.
As a matter of fact, the U.S. support of Sharon's words here
is looked at as a helpless attempt to fool the world.
Opposition against these American veto politicis also reached
a new high meanwhile. In other words nobody over here
gives a damn about the American position anymore.
It should be as well mentioned that speakers of the Jewish
communities in France and Germany rejected Sharon's call for
leaving France in a harsh manner paired with strong critics
directed towards the person of Sharon and his supporters.
In other words Sharon is not even speaking for his own
people in Europe anymore and has obviously lost his
sense for reality like Bush did, as far as Europe is concerned. IMHO

Mike - "...and will not be allowed to
take away the RIGHT of the Palestinian nation for their own land under the conditions described in previous U.N."
Palestinian nation? SINCE WHEN!!! The "N" in UN stand for "nations"...of which Palestine is not. Therefore, the UN has no jurisdiction. Period. They can say what they want until they run out of breath and turn blue in the face, but it won't change the facts. If Saudi Arabia wants to contest something, let them. They won't. They're too busy laughing at all the trouble Israel is having with this "Palestinian nation" lie that began many years ago.
Mike - "As a matter of fact, the U.S. support of Sharon's words here is looked at as a helpless attempt to fool the world."
Too late for that...most of the world has already been fooled (see above).
Mike - "In other words nobody over here
gives a damn about the American position anymore."
Until they are threatened...then they come running. And if America responds, we pay for their lack of intestinal fortitude to do what was necessary with the lives of our people. Been that way for about 100 years now. How quickly some forget all of this. But, in all reality, you should speak only for yourself, Mike. I'm sure there are those who aren't as quick to forget our sacrifices...but wait, Germany was one of the reasons we had to sacrifice...so I take that back. You would have no wish to remember it.
As the Muslims continue to arrive in France, the country will continue to become more anti-semitic. Politicians will be forced to take steps to appease the Muslim population...or at least with regards to it. While Jews in France are peaceful for the most part, I do not think I would say the same for many of the Muslims. The Jews in France simply do not want to call attention to themselves...they would rather live there in peace with a low profile so as to avoid trouble. This is why they're angry with Sharon. I suspect that at some point they will be forced to leave anyway due to circumstances in France becomming even more anti-semitic over time.
