It's not an example of 'history', it's an examply of a social philosophy that is important to understand. I'd love to read a really comprehensive book on the social philosophy of fear, if one exists, but that's what the example is about. The perpetuation of fear through a perpetual enemy is something to think about. It has social consequences as well as political control ramifications. Maybe it's completely pointless, but then again, maybe it's the key to changing the entire world.
