Larree, as far as knowing that our leaders have deliberately lied, I know of one situation that is absolutely true. Colin Powell told the UN that a shipment of metallic cylinders used to enrich uranium was intercepted. After this statement, scientists from the Livermore National Laboratory went on one of the news shows (20/20 or 60 minutes) and explicitly stated that their findings regarding the cylinders absolutely and positively expressed that these could not be used for any part of a nuclear program, that the only weapons application that they could used for would be more conventional weapons like rocket propelled grenades. And they told the administration this information prior to Powell's speech. Why would he deliberately lie about these cylinders? And why doesn't anyone seem to care? As well, we've all heard about the confusion regarding the African uranium connection, and even if no one deliberately lied in that case, no one worked hard enough to search for the truth, and that's their job especially if people are potentially going to be killed over it.



Two small examples, but two very good reasons to mistrust our leaders. I'm not anti-American, I'm pro-American. I'm pro-truth, pro-knowledge, pro-informed populace. That's very very American. I cannot willingly 'support' a President who lies to me, whether that's Clinton and blow jobs or Bush and war. As an American I am entitled to the truth, these people work for me and every other American, not their parties, not their personal ideals, not their personal goals, they work for me and you, and having high expectations of those people is not anti-American.

I'm not asking for the truth during the war, we weren't at war when our gov't lied, so what's your answer to that? The government should be allowed to lie to us to justify a war? My statement is justified.

Very good piece, that, Debbie. Shamir, along with other Jewish writers such as Noam Chomsky, is consistently good on this subject. It suggests very strongly that the majority of Jews are not brainless Likudite thugs. I think that an oft-neglected element in this debate is the internal political struggle in Israel. If Sharon and his barbaric henchman could be deposed for a long enough period of time, say 2 or 3 elections (how long does the Israeli parliament sit?), then the peace process would have more chance with a more flexible and intelligent government willing to consider proportional representation.

Galmin, I kind of expected the same response if and when Larree gets around to it. To which I can only reply, if anyone believes that's a viable reason, read or re-read 1984 just to reaquaint yourself with the political power of perpetual, neverending war. It's a very effective tool for compliance.



As well, the more I thought about this subject of truth and what I'm entitled to, even in times of war, I'm entitled to the truth and not lies. If a Pentagon official says: "I'm not obliged to answer that question at this time", that doesn't bother me, I understand that some things can't be shared. That's not a lie. It's a procrastination, . If a Pentagon official is asked "How many civilians have been killed by coalition forces?" and the response is "None.". That is a lie. You don't have to answer the question, but if you do it better by the f**king truth. That's what we're entitled to as Americans.



Forego questions that may threaten national security, fine, I can accept that. Do not deliberately lie and pretend that it has something to do with national security. In fact, only the opposite can be true, an outright lie can only create weakness in national security once the lie is found out.
