Calm down a bit and stop cussing so much, will you? My pop-up stopper is going haywire when I try to visit this thread. I didn't set it to detect cussing, it just came like that. Or perhaps they come with Larree detectors these days. Please. A little decorum, old chap. :box :aua

Oh, btw, we don't wish you were wrong, you just are wrong, it has nothing to do with us. We don't want the corporate bullies to stop rampaging round the world and the Likudites to stop stealing Palestinian land just to prove you wrong, we just want them to stop doing it because it causes a lot of trouble, in case you hadn't noticed. Extremely bothersome and a frightful bore, all this imperialism and righteousness, old chap, we British had learnt that through the bitter experience of running history's largest empire and then packing it all in when we found out that nobody liked us very much. We used to use the same excuses, you know, liberation, democracy, development and all that tosh. Now that not very bright chap Mr. Blair has gone and revived the whole thing. Jolly poor show on his part. He'll rue the day. Ta ta, old fruit.

If those retarded moronic brain damaged palestinian terrorists would f*cking commit to stopping the violence against Israelis there would be peace in the f*cking Middle f*cking East. So f*ck you. These non-f*cking racist rat bastards need to accept Israel's right to f*cking exist and end their f*cking violence. If the worthless sh*ts DO NOT do that, I hope to all f*cking hell that they are the ones driven into the f*cking sea. Comprende? Those mother f*ckers want to drive all Israelis and Jews into the sea? May they be driven into the f*cking sea. I show no more mercy what-so-f*cking-ever. If the only f*cking way to achieve peace with these morons is to off them, then let's get on with the f*cking show. They want me dead? May they die first.

And that's the f*cking mellow Christmas card version of the way I feel, O' ignorant one.

Laree, perhaps you should read the views of a Jew living in Israel? This was in our largest English daily newspaper today - the South China Morning Post.

A JEWISH REACTION

Good news for Middle East peace? Think again

ISRAEL SHAMIR

Prev. Story

My wife, alerted by a phone call, yelled from the kitchen: "Turn on the TV." On the screen was US President George W. Bush's photograph with a caption which read: "Bush - the former dictator is arrested." I cannot deny that it was a moment of great elation.

Mr Bush deserved to be arrested and tried - for his invasion of sovereign Iraq and Afghanistan, for the thousands of dead, and tortured men and women wherever he took his war on Islam, for his support of Enron, and for his doubtful handling of September 11. In light of the Patriot Act - which gave the government broader surveillance authority - and for the unconstitutional way he got to the White House, Mr Bush can be called a dictator. But "former"? Had the people of the US risen up in arms and removed the tyrant?

Alas, no such luck. The former dictator referred to was, of course, the deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein. What an anticlimax. Pictures of the humiliated Hussein, bearded, tired, confused and treated like a captured tiger in a zoo, were repeating endlessly. He opened his mouth, and we were forced to look in. He looked human and frail; too human, his dishevelled beard and large eyes make him akin to Leo Tolstoy or Alexander Solzhenitsyn. If, in 1941, Hitler's army had not been stopped by the Red Army on the outskirts of Moscow, this would have been the fate of Joseph Stalin. And it would have been Mao Zedong's fate, too, had Chinese soldiers not stopped General Douglas MacArthur's hordes on the Yalu river in 1950.

In a Palestinian caf? where Jerusalem artists and teachers mingle with villagers gloom was hanging like a rain cloud. The Palestinians were distressed and spoke in hushed tones. Their feelings had been hurt by the dishonourable display of the captive ruler. Whether Hussein was liked or not, he was the president of a great Arab nation and his humiliation was the humiliation of all Arabs.

He was not the first captured ruler in the world's bloody history. More than 800 years ago, a victorious Arab army captured west European crusader princes. Then, however, the Arab commander, Saladin, treated his captives courteously. He did not parade them with an open, red-painted mouth in front of his troops. But chivalry and honour, so dear to an Arab heart, are not American virtues: the US dared to attack Iraq only after 10 years of United Nations sanctions.

The Palestinians had additional reasons to worry. Iraq was a big and independent Arab country. It was by no means a counterbalance to the united might of Israel and the US, but its existence could stay the Zionist hand from particularly wild actions. In 1948, Iraqi volunteers stopped the Israeli army expelling the Palestinian residents of Jenin and Nablus and saved them from the fate of homeless refugees. In 1973, the Iraqi presence stopped Israelis moving on to Damascus. Since then, the Iraqis have supported Palestinians, collecting money to send to widows and orphans of the resistance.

But the US-installed regime in Baghdad is rabidly anti-Palestinian and pro-Israeli. Ahmad Chalabi, the American protég? has called to establish friendly relations with Israel; plans to send Iraqi oil to Haifa refineries are being discussed; and the occupation forces have expelled Palestinian refugees from their temporary homes in Baghdad. Hussein could not do much; his anti-Islamic policy did not endear him to religious Arabs, but he was a friend, and an independent Arab voice.

Israelis in a nearby pub were excited. For them, Hussein's capture was good news, politically and economically. Since the US-led victory, Israeli companies have aggressively moved into Iraq. "All inquiries about doing business in Iraq are referred to a select list of intermediaries issued by the American authorities," I was told by an Australian businessman. "All are Jewish, and most of them are Israeli." Israeli TV reports also say the Iraqi Jews have placed multi-billion dollar claims for properties taken from them. Hussein's capture will undermine the Iraqi resistance and allow the Israelis to raise their share of the war spoils.

But Israeli politicians foresee an even better outcome. "Deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein could be offered a deal in which he would give his captors information on ... how he smuggled some of the weapons of mass destruction into Syria," said a military observer of the Israeli daily, Haaretz. "In exchange, he would face life imprisonment, and not be executed for war crimes." That would save Bush's and British Prime Minister Tony Blair's bacon, after accusations that they lied to their people to justify war. More important, it would accomplish an old wish of Israeli leaders; the US tanks would roll into Damascus. With the conquest of Syria, the next stage of the Middle East subjugation to Israel would be complete and the road to Saudi oil riches would be open.

Hussein's capture will not bring peace to Iraq and the Middle East. Most probably, it will be used to jump-start a new round of war in the troubled area.

Israel Shamir is an Israeli writer based in Jaffa, Israel.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A Jewish folk tale relates the story of a mute child who had never said a word despite all the efforts of the doctors. Then one day, at the ripe age of ten, he dropped his spoon and cried out, "The soup is too salty!" His parents asked him in amazement why he had kept silent for years, and the child replied, "Until now, everything was all right".

That is the story of Israel Shamir's sudden appearance in the English-language media. This leading Russian-Israeli intellectual, writer, translator and journalist was well known to his Russian readers, thanks to his books The Pine and the Olive and Travels in Japan, and to his translations of Joyce, Homer and Agnon into his native Russian. He did not write in English until January 2001, when Israeli attacks on Palestinians forced him to give up literature and turn to politics. His articles appeared on the Internet, were placed on many sites and were reprinted by numerous newspapers and magazines, and translated into many languages. By using the Internet, Shamir proved that a word of freedom can overcome any censorship.

A native of Novosibirsk, Siberia, a grandson of a professor of mathematics and a descendant of a Rabbi from Tiberias, Palestine, he studied at the prestigious School of the Academy of Sciences, and read Math and Law at Novosibirsk University. In 1969, he moved to Israel, served as paratrooper in the army and fought in the 1973 war. After his military service he resumed his study of Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, but abandoned the legal profession in pursuit of a career as a journalist and writer. He got his first taste of journalism with Israel Radio, and later went freelance. His varied assignments included covering Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia in the last stages of the war in South East Asia. In 1975, Shamir joined the BBC and moved to London. In 1977-79 he wrote for the Israeli daily Maariv and other papers from Japan. While in Tokyo, he wrote Travels with My Son, his first book, and translated a number of Japanese classics.

After returning to Israel in 1980, Shamir wrote for the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz and the newspaper Al Hamishmar, and worked in the Knesset as the spokesman for the Israel Socialist Party (Mapam). He translated the works of S.Y. Agnon, the only Hebrew Nobel Prize winning writer, from the original Hebrew to Russian. His work was published and reprinted many times in both Israel and in Russia. He also translated selected chapters of Joyce's Ulysses, which were well received by publishers in Moscow, Tel Aviv, New York and Austin, Texas. Another of his translations, the Israeli-Arab Wars by President Herzog, was published in London. His most popular work, The Pine and the Olive, the story of Palestine/Israel, was published in 1988. Its cover carried a painting by the Ramallah painter, Nabil Anani.

As the first Palestinian Intifada began, Shamir had left Israel for Russia, where he covered the eventful years 1989-1993. While in Moscow, he reported for Haaretz, but was sacked for publishing an article calling to the return the Palestinian refugees and the rebuilding of their ruined villages. He wrote for various Russian newspapers and magazines, including the daily Pravda and the weekly Zavtra. In 1993, he returned to Israel and settled in Jaffa. He wrote for Russian newspapers both in Israel and Russia and contributed to various literary magazines. During this period, he also worked on a new translation of the Odyssey, which was published in 2000 in St. Petersburg, Russia. His next big project was translating a Hebrew medieval Talmudic manuscript into Russian.

In response to the second Palestinian Intifada, Shamir has abandoned his literary occupation and resumed his work as a journalist. In the midst of the endless talk of a "Two State solution", Shamir, along with Edward Said, has become a leading champion of the "One Man, One Vote, One State" solution in all of Palestine/Israel. His most recent essays have been circulating widely on the Internet and are now posted on many prominent media sites. With every new article, Shamir is establishing himself as a journalist whose work speaks to the aspirations of both the Israelis and the Palestinians.

Shamir (50) lives in Jaffa, he is father of two sons.

Truck explosion kills at least 10 in Baghdad

At least 10 people were killed and 15 others wounded this morning after a truck laden with explosives detonated in central Baghdad.

The attack comes one day after U.S. President George W. Bush said he believed former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein should face the death penalty after being tried.

Here's just a little online poll (of course not representative overall, but showing the mood impressively) performed at CNN.de.

The question is: Is Mr. Bush authorized to demand the death penalty for Saddam Hussein?

(notice the little difference in questioning... not "should Hussein face the death penalty?", but "is Mr. Bush authorized to demand the death penalty?"....

"JA" means "YES" :D

"NEIN" means "NO" :D

I'd vote "nein" as well. I hope the Iraqi people get a crack at him, though.
