If he saw what a cesspool China has become Mao would weep. All of those millions he had to kill before and after the revolution and millions more that suffered through the Cultural Revolution to witness what a festering, puss of a mass sore that China is today would shake his soul.

I will explain why after you research the social conditions of the common people with the advent of the so called mixed economy. I saw a documentary on China last night and the people are really suffering under this regime.

btw I am not a Communist. I am a member of the Green Party leaning to the left of most of the members.

So what did the documentary say? Who made it? What was it about? You're speaking to TWO people actually living in a SAR of China who visit China regularly. Maybe we can throw some light onto stuff that's on your mind?

It followed three families over the course of two years. The famiies were of different economic classes. I believe one family lives in Shanghi; the other in a smaller town and one in the country, farmers.

There are also stories of businesses rushing into China and forming joint ventures only to be screwed over completely. There is no rule of law.

But to be fair I think they are trying very hard to bring China into the 21st century and they are far more "capitalistic" than you'd expect!

I think China is doing far better than India in many respects, and India is democracy.

But its true, there are many documentaries that make you sick.

More specific. When a person has a job and has absolutely no recourse in being laid off and then loses any medical &/or dental benefits and retirement funds, also no worker's comp. in a country that is spozed to be socialistic it is a travisty.

In my view China is now just another Dictarship with scant if any redeeming value.

Phil, this is a fact of life in the developing world. Does this happen in the US? I dont know how it works there - or is supposed to work.

It seems to be the case in the USA. I strongly feel that the USA is no longer a Democracy but an Oligarchy. The population by and large is brainwashed. The present regime here is ruining the ecoonomy and doesn't care. The super rich are now out to dominate the planet and the USA isn't that important to them. As long as the Middle Class is decimated the people in power will stay in power. If the Middle Class ever wakes up there could be a revolution but that possibility is real doubtful.

There are so many homeless people in the US, its amazing for a superpower - you'd expect poverty, crime and corruption from a third world country, but not from a superpower. And corruption at the very very highest levels.

I still have faith that the middle class will see the light, regardless of the brainwashing.

But its amazing to me how many teachers there are in the US with violent, fascist views. Is hate, racism and narrowness what students are taught - and not to question your corrupt leaders - they are always right?

Deb & Phil, the both of you are pretty quick to bash Americans for not doing something about the evils that exist in their country......but wait a minute. Don't those evils exist in just about every country? Aren't 3rd-world countries simply those that have been around longer and have already reached the logical conclusion to this thirst for money and power? Yep, and yep. So now, I must ask what you are doing about this world-wide problem that exists in your own respective countries?

"Before removing the mote in your brothers eye, first remove the plank that is in your own".

Ring a bell?

I don't know what country you are from Phil, but poverty is BIG in India, Deb. What are you doing about it? Try showing them your "light" maybe....but at least refrain from the anti-Bush rhetoric. It is getting old, and I question that there ever was a point. ;)

GWB is merely a puppet. The super rich are funding the Globalization. Ever hear of the Military Industrial Complex? Another 4 years of Neo-cons and the USA will have gone backwards in social reform to before the 1930's. There are many issues that I have concerns about but the main ones that I have the most concern about are fascism, the environment and the Supreme Court.

There are only two people here that have right wing opinions on this Forum and both are extremely ignorant regarding the poltical set up of the USA. Red herrings of retorts won't make for a solid debate with me. I am living in the San Francisco Bay Area at this time and am a member of the the Green Party. I am NOT "bashing" America. The present regime that is trying to trod on basic liberties and bring the USA backwards is NOT America, they are con Artists and thieves and all the other attributes that have been mentioned by Debbie.
