Interesting and informative, spaceAce.

I believe it(music piracy) is a very legit concern as it relates to the creative control and financial well-being of songwriters/artists.

Of course, a lot of people hate the RIAA :rant due it's motives being not driven by concern for writers/artists, but rather by the purely bottom-line nature of the recording industry.

I thought Robbie William's take on the whole piracy issue was hilarious. Not because I dont take it seriously and think he's a prat, but because he was sitting pretty with a fat cheque in advance, and laughing at the music industry. Mean, but hilarious.

LOL!

You know, when I first learned about P2P file sharing I was quite excited about it, but as I try to get interest in my own music I realize that having easy access to absolutely any artist you want at any time for free actually diminishes independent artists' ability to compete within the industry. File sharing actually hurts indie artists, not because we're not getting paid or people are subverting copyright, but because legit d/l sites with wonderful and interesting music is bypassed for Kazaa where people will search out the artists who already have all the main exposure we all crave (radio, tv, etc.). If piracy is brought under a bit of control two things will happen. More artists (including major label artists) will offer free legal music in more places, and more listeners will seek out new music from different sites. Ultimately, curtailing file sharing benefits will benefit musicians and listeners within legal means.

I agree absolutely. I am in two bands - one does live gigs (Hei Sha) the other only creates and records - thats called Ignition. Ignition will be releasing a CD in the coming months, but now have to decide whether we will allow the songs to be only streamable or downloadable on our sites; knowing full well that even if we sell ONE CD, the tunes will likely be out there, freely available on Kazaa. I even know 12 year old kids who use kazaa!

Everyone wants everything for free, frightening. As for me, I have no clue how to use file sharing and am terrified to allow anyone into my computer - isnt that how it works?

...worthless.

IF you want to make money you have to have a great live show because people still have to pay to get into a concert, and you better have a great looking logo that looks even better on a t-shirt !!!

sadly, I agree with you. That's why I have two bands. I wish I could combine them but that is not to be :(

I wish I was wrong. But the fact is that everybody knows how cheap a blank CD or DVD is. And everybody also knows where they can find their favorite music online for free. The only way people will willingly spend the money to buy your recorded music in the future (as in now) will be if you give them way more than "just" the music. We all have to become marketing masters to survive. I have some ideas on the drawing board. ;)

That's a very good point :thumb - people into massive p2p downloading are rarely looking to discover new talent!

If you read this article more carefully it's all about the 'con' of the record industry claiming that file-sharing have affected their sales?

I agree with Larree that you need to be an exciting live act with a fabulous logo and lots of different types of merchandise to be successful - a CD and your songs are only part of the equation. It's just the way the world is these days. To criticize your fans for not conforming to your standards is rather inane....

To really peeve off the fanbase, I think "Metallica" won the idiot-bad PR prize by going after individuals/schools with legal action on a personal level. That'll endear ya to the unwashed masses!!

Kinda in the same vein as Bob Dylan becoming a multi-millionaire by singing of the poor and economically deprived. :eek Now, that's a bit of irony, what?

"here's a song I wrote about being down to only 4 luxury vacation homes...."

Nope, Chris, metal as a whole has never been my cup of tea. I'd know few of the big-hair metal groups without a program, lol. I couldn't even name one Metallica tune:blush

Now, "Spinal Tap" is cool and comes to mind when I think of the metal-poser genre. Great good fun :ww - you've seen "This is Spinal Tap"?

Hey, on the RIAA/music sharing issues writer-singer Janis Ian has written some really good stuff -

Spinal Tap - BRILLIANT movie - hahahahahahahhaa Im looking forward to watching it again!

Hey Ron! That's an EXCELLENT article written by Janis Ian! I read both of them. She's got a lot of truth in her article. I always laugh when my artists say all they want is a recording contract - I start explaining it to them and they say "But I'll be able to sell MILLIONS of albums" etc. :wgrin
