Ken,

I just moved to Nevada, where prostitution is legal in all but two counties (and I happen to live in one of them).

Having lived around prostitutes when I lived in SF, and having to get used to that lifestyle being a part of my life for a while, I've developed a laissee-faire attitude about it. I may not like it, but as long as I'm not hurt personally by it, and IF they weren't forced into it, then I don't really see what the big deal is. It's their body, they're responsible for it. If they keep it clean and disease free, so much the better.

If there is no monitoring, chances for containment are virtually impossible. Luckily they were able to track this guy's partners.

Fifth HIV Case Strikes California Porn Industry

By Gina Keating

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A veteran porn actress on Wednesday became the fifth adult film performer in Los Angeles to test positive for HIV (news - web sites) since an industrywide quarantine went into effect last month to stop the spread of the potentially deadly virus, an industry health care official said.

The actress was one of 14 performers who worked directly with actor Darren James, a longtime porn performer who is believed to be the source of the outbreak.

The latest diagnosis marks the largest outbreak of the AIDS (news - web sites) virus in Southern California's porn industry in six years.

The AIDS scare has prompted a virtual shutdown of adult film production in recent weeks and raised the prospect of tighter regulation on an industry, which has long thrived on Hollywood's fringes in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles.

James may have contracted the virus while filming in Brazil on a "non-condom" set in March and has passed it to at least three of his co-stars, said Sharon Mitchell, who runs the HIV screening program for the Adult Industry Medical Foundation.

The woman's name was not made public but Mitchell described her as "an actress working in the industry for several years."

"She had a good head on shoulders and was well prepared for this diagnosis," said Mitchell, a former porn actress with a doctorate in public health. "She did realize that HIV was an occupational hazard."

The woman was one of about 50 porn actors under a 60-day quarantine because they had worked directly with James or with the women who had onscreen sex with him after his suspected exposure to the HIV virus (news - web sites).

The partners of the latest actress to test HIV-positive have already tested negative once, but will be monitored for another 30 days to ensure that they are not carrying the disease, Mitchell said.

"This is the benefit of containment," Mitchell said. "They haven't been out working. They have been under quarantine."

In an unrelated case, a transsexual porn actress whose stage name is Jennifer tested positive for HIV on Tuesday. Her only two partners returned negative tests on Wednesday, indicating the virus had spread no further, Mitchell said.

Mitchell has advocated a moratorium on filming until the quarantine is lifted on June 8 but not all of the 200 or so production companies that comprise the multibillion-dollar industry have complied.

She said the last major outbreak of AIDS in the industry, which employs about 1,200 actors, occurred in 1998 when six people tested positive for HIV. There was an additional case the following year and none since then until James tested positive for the virus in mid-April.

The latest HIV outbreak prompted calls for unprecedented inspection of film shoots and mandatory condom use -- proposals that critics said would drive the industry underground or out of state.

Porn?

I can definitely say I don't like porn.

Yuk.

I won't say I've never watched it, but I WILL say I don't like it.

It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

(No pun intended....)

Two million?!?!? hahahahahaha You guys are funny! Shaun says no amount would be enough!! And something I interpreted as :nana hahahahahahaha

So no one is responding to the "Have you been to a prostitute?" I know a LOT of men who have. For a variety of reasons which I wont go into here as it's a family board.

Porn? That's a personal preference and not necessarily (in my opinion) a point of view needed to be thrust into anyone's face. thrust - why does that word put a smile on my face??? :rollin

Hahahaha! Well, I don't mind answering, Chris. Nope, never even gave it serious thought. Not because of any puritanical or religious external reasons. I don't know that I could live myself very well if I did, because it's very much a person to person thing.

About the best comparison I could make on my take & attitude: One time I went with some friends to our yearly State Fair. All sorts of fun & cool things to see & do. Among the exhibits was one that said: "See The World's Fattest Man!". It was only 25 or 50 cents, so we decided to check it out. We paid and went in to see what was what.

In the tent was a small glass booth where a quite overweight black fellow was just sitting on a chair, people would look at him and then go on out. I felt sorry for the guy, it was like looking at an animal in the zoo - except it was a fellow human being. I took one glance and headed staightaway for the exit.

I felt ashamed (of myself), even though he probably made some good money and maybe even didn't mind people staring at him. That's the same bad self-view I'd experience if were to patronize a "working girl".

And to be honest, I don't think it's all that difficult for people to find a sexual partner in today's world, if that's what a person is looking for. So visiting a call girl/guy would seem to be a bit of a moot exercize.

I tried to Google up (without success) a commencement speech some valedictorian gave awhile back that got him into a bit of trouble. Throughout the speech he sprinkled in quite a few sexual innuedos, e.g. "thrusting into the future", "probing deeply into the possiblitiies", "satisfying our need".

:aua

My take on porn is that it's boring after awhile; like everything else there's nothing new under that sun. If a new body part were to suddenly evolve, now that would make it interesting for awhile. Otherwise, the novelty should wear off before too long.

Of course, the sad side is how many of even the best of people get addicted to it like a gambler with a gambling addiction. As with many other things, if it interferes with a person's life - negatively impacting a spouse, family, job, self-image, etc. - that's not a good at all.

Kosovo UN troops 'fuel sex trade'

The presence of peacekeepers in Kosovo is fuelling the sexual exploitation of women and encouraging trafficking, according to Amnesty International.

It claims UN and Nato troops in the region are using the trafficked women and girls for sex and some have been involved in trafficking itself.

Lieutenant Colonel Jim Moran said some policies had changed. Peacekeepers were "not allowed" off base in civilian clothing or to go to bars and nightclubs, he said.

"Each nation is responsible for the conduct of their soldiers, and if they find a soldier that is breaking the law, it is up to them to bring them to justice," he added.

There has been no comment from the UN.

It is based on interviews with women and girls who have been trafficked from countries such as Moldova, Bulgaria and the Ukraine to service Kosovo's sex industry.

They are said to have been moved illegally across borders and sold in "trading houses," where they are sometimes drugged and "broken in" before being sold from one trafficker to another for prices ranging from 50 to 3,500 euros ($60 - 4,200).

It says that after 40,000 K-For troops and hundreds of Unmik personnel were sent to Kosovo in 1999, a "small-scale local market for prostitution was transformed into a large-scale industry based on trafficking run by organised criminal networks".

The number of places in Kosovo where trafficked women and girls may be exploited, such as nightclubs, bars, restaurants, hotels and cafes, has increased from 18 in 1999 to more than 200 in 2003.

The report claims international personnel make up about 20% of the people using trafficked women and girls even though its members comprise only 2% of Kosovo's population.

German soldiers were instructed by their superiors not to go with prostitutes, but went anyway.

"They told the pimp, that if someone would be coming, he should alert them," she said. "After a while the pimp employed a guardian."

Aw, shucks - thank you the kind words re writing, Chris! :blush

I'll be doing a lot more on my crusty ol' laptop. Though the youngest bro, before his illness, upgraded me to a better desktop PC, it's not as flexible for getting comfortable & typing! By the way, thanks too for the kind words re: the bro in another thread, he's home this week, recouperating.

You mentioned that prostitution was legal in HK - are the "johns" subject to arrest, though? And is there a HK local slang for the "johns", like "chicken" for the ladies?

In St.Paul - one twin in the "Twin Cities" of Minnesota - the cops publicly post pics & info of both the johns and "working women" on the police dept's website(link below). That's way too much like a "Scarlet Letter" shaming for my sensibilities!

Glad to hear your brother is recuperating. Is he the computer nerd of the family?? :popcorn
