I'm shocked at the devastation. Am trying to contact my friend who moved to Samui (Thailand) last month. This is terrible. Don't know how many tourists have died in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India or Thailand. God bless the families.

Oh my....... this was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded...

Lots of European tourists are missing as well, who were there spending their christmas holidays........

The news says that this was the strongest quake on the planet in 40 years. I've been in a number of quakes, living in California. My prayers go out to the survivors.

Prayers and blessings don't help much, I'm afraid.

The tsunamis do not hit the shores without warning, so what these geologically unstable areas need are stronger buildings and large purpose-built shelters. This would cost billions, of course.

My friend on Samui is OK, they didn't feel a thing although the sea was choppier than normal.

But then we realised a couple of our friends were on Koh Phi Phi (the island near Phuket) where 200 bungalows got washed out to sea. I cannot reach them and am really concerned.

What I've seen on the news is so terrible. I cannot imagine what it must be like to be there.

One Aussie tourist had her baby swept from her arms and will never see it again.

Phuket is a popular tourist destination for people over here, so there are many anxious Aussies waiting to hear if their family members are alive. A friend of mine's inlaws live in the area, and she hasn't been able to contact them.

The best thing we can all do is to support the Red Cross in their relief efforts. They are going to need lots of money. I'm gonna do it on-line right now.

We've not been able to contact the friends on Koh Phi Phi or our friends in Phuket. Then we realised another friend runs a hotel in Langkawi, Malaysia and cant get hold of him either. 20,000 people died so far. It's so unbelievable. I'm numb

What's somehow buried in the news is, that even in Somalia and Kenia deaths were reported.

I mean... that's unbelievable 6,000 kilometers away from the center of the earthquake!!!!!!!!!!!
