I think I'd go along with Chris on this - communication. The ability to be understood and to understand others correctly.

That applies to all human relationships, even if it's just giving or taking an order at a fast food place.

In something deeper and of more consequence, it's essential. People as individuals and couples change & grow as time passes. I'm always deeply impressed by elderly couples who are the same companions that they were way-back when they where 20somethings. They never "lost touch".
