Lesson #2: Don't give up too quick! (of course backups are the way to go usually...)

I assume you have an IDE drive. If you don't know how.. try to find somebody who is familiar with computers and take your new harddrive (configured of course as IDE master) and connect your old HD configured as a IDE-slave (done by setting jumpers on the HD).

Reboot.

Then look if you are able to access your data or at least parts of them. Works in 90% of all cases, since usually the FAT table or boot sector of your crashed HD are corrupted, which doesn't matter if you have another IDE-master boot device installed you are booting from.

If this fails, bring your HD to a computer repair shop and ask if they can run a data recovery program like Norton Ghost or Norton Utilities (or anything else which is useful) and burn your data on CD's or DVD's.

At least you should try that before finally whining, you know? :D

That's a bit of bad news, Paul.

But as Mike sez, files on the disk may still be recovered.

In addition to Mike's advice, you could just try popping the drive into another PC's open slot as a "slave D:, E: or F: drive" to see if the PC's working drive (usually C:) can read it and copy the files you lost.

PAUL! It's not necessarily all gone. Do as Mike suggests! My old computer from 2 years ago died too, I got my cousin to stick the harddrive into the new computer and "Lo & behold - there were all my files!"
