That is the downside to cell phones. I had a phone that broke and it took months to get back what phone numbers I could.

Now I keep a list of important numbers just in case.

...although I don't know where it is. :ohno

I don't know why they don't always hand them in Paul, I've lost a phone outright and another time left my phone on the ferry and got it back, just luck of the draw I guess... People can just replace SIM cards and use your phone so...

ANd yes I always make a point of writing down numbers nowadays - when I got a new phone, I didn't realise the SIM didn't transfer the memory, so I lost VALUABLE sms messages as well as phone numbers....

I think only a certain number of phone numbers will fit on the SIM card, because when I got my last new phone and put the SIM from my old phone into it, some numbers simply disappeared. I had to charge up my old phone to get them, as they were stored in the old phone's memory.

Last year, my phone went missing and I was in a panic (my phone has international dialing capabilities, and it also had some rather 'suggestive' SMS messages on it from my then-boyfriend). I remembered using it in the car when leaving work, but didn't have it when I got home.

It turned out that it fell out of my bag when I'd parked the car at the post office, when I'd stopped to pick up my mail on the way home. A guy found it, and answered it when I called it later. So I picked it up on the way home. Phew! :)

I've had people leave their phones here when they've visited, too, and have heard many stories about lost or stolen phones.

Over here, the phone company can actually block a stolen phone from being used (each phone has a registration number, which has nothing to do with the SIM card). So stealing or finding phones and putting your own SIM into it is no longer an option.
