ack. i am so disgusted with the news and media. anytime the radio or tv news is on when the kids are around i turn it off. it's a sad state of affairs when i don't feel comfortable to watch my local news. i am frequently distressed and i find it more than depressing to think about having to explain child porn, sexual abuse by priests and others, terrorism, anti-semitism, anti-americanism, anti-anythingism for that matter, the iraq "situation", beheadings, mass graves, world poverty, bigotry and racism in my own country as well as others, the total mess of the american political situation, the inequalities of rich vs poor, the horrid and offensive influences the AMA and NRA have on my government etc etc etc. all of which i've seen either in our newspapers, or on the television or radio news this week. ( not to mention the horrifying situation in tibet and the plight of tibetans worldwide which i might add is conspicuously NOT in the news in my opinion.) call it sticking our collective heads in the sand if you will, for me i say all the stuff my ten and 6 year old kids can see and hear on the news and radio is too much for their fragile little minds and the news is better when it's turned OFF than when it's on.
so what i do when i turn off the news and radio is talk about how i see the world as one piece. we are one people, we are all the same. i like that my kids have mostly international friends because that is a real-life illustration of what i try and teach them. i find it more comforting to see my kids be globally and environmentally minded and to know that they are aware that the world is much bigger than our personal skin color, nationality and economic status than to think that they are aware of current events. current events SUCK.
my personal mantra is: "the same sun shines on us all." i repeat that to myself many many many times during the day and i tell it to my kids. i wish the world would all wake up one day and realize the truth of it. we are all the same- we are all one world. i hope more than anything that i can one day live in a world where we treat each other with that understanding. the same sun shines on us all. i'm telling you all this because i was just listening to the news while cleaning off my computer desktop. one of the files that i had saved there was one of a mural i was painting on one of my workroom walls, i thought finding the file while feeling disgusted at the news was a nice sign (it's not a good picture at all though unfortunately). i painted it as a reminder to myself and others and as an illustration of my belief system. the same sun shines on us all.

i sure will nina. and speaking of them, gabriel was watching Fantasia one day and the final song on there is Ave Maria. he got all excited thinking it was going to be you singing it. then he got mad because "That is Nina's song!" i kept meaning to tell you that.
