Yeah! btw. is there an Earth flag yet?

Well, I don't know about "flags", AAChris, but personally I think this photo from 1969 puts things into perspective. Just a "beautiful little blue ball" from the Moon. Earth-rise looks so peaceful from there, doesn't it?

Well, Saturn is full of mysteries incl. it's moons.

Never before pictures were available showing the Saturn rings in detail or Titan's clouds. It will take days if not weeks until the first sharp color-pic-data will be collected and released.

This is the first wave of pictures just released by ESA, which are nonetheless very interesting IMHO

Saturn's moon TITAN which has a athmosphere!

The images show details of the mysterious outer F ring that lies at a distance of approximately 140 200 kilometres from Saturn.

The image shows the outer part of the 325-kilometer wide Encke Gap in Saturn's A Ring, which is formed by the moon Pan. The ring material just outside the Encke Gap is disturbed by Pan.

The image shows details in the Encke Gap (325 kilometres) in Saturn's A ring. The centre of the gap lies at a distance of 133 600 kilometres from Saturn. The image shows a ring in the centre of the gap.

The wavy inner edge of the gap and the wake-like structures emanating from its inner edge are caused by the tiny moon Pan that orbits in the middle of the gap. Two fainter ring features are also visible in the gap region.

The image shows the 35-kilometre wide Keeler Gap in the outer part of Saturn's A Ring. Unlike the larger Encke Gap, which is formed by the moon Pan, no moon is presently known to orbit within the Keeler Gap.

The image shows the Prometheus 12:11 density wave in the lower left part of the image and the Mimas 5:3 bending wave in the middle of the image.

Again, this is a picture taken from Cassini's on board camera, not a painting :)

That's an amazing photo, Mike!

By the way, I think it's good for all countries to be proud of their people's efforts at excellence, wether it is in space or in the Olympics.

But although "Old Glory" (the US flag) was on display at mission control, there might not have been a mission control at all without the fine German mind of Wernher von Braun to help get things "off the ground" about 50 years back!

I suppose if there are any out there, they may have their own skyful of planets & stars that they marvel about!

Actually the first thing about us may have reached them already, since TV & radio broadcasts travel out into space at 299,792,458 metres per second. So they're likely just now getting the first episodes of "I Love Lucy" and other early TV shows. They scary thing is when they recieve the crummy current "reality TV" programmes in about 50 years from now; I expect them to invade and wipe out all earthlings out for that!

There is a joke about the spacecraft "Voyager" which was sent to check out our solar system 26 years ago - then it left our system to go into the vastness of space. It has what's called the "Golden Record"; kind of a "message in a bottle". It contains information about earth and it's people. It also has an audio part meant to be played at 16-2/3 rpm - apparently scientists figured aliens wouldn't have CD players.

The audio part contains a large & diverse variety of sounds from earth - sounds of nature & people and all sorts of music - including some 1950s rock & roll.

Okay, so the joke goes:

Space scientists are overjoyed and excited when they finally receive a short, one sentence response to the "Golden Record" from an alien civilization. And the reponse was:

"Send us more Chuck Berry!"
