So true Debbie, so true. :sensational

It's small things that make a HUGE difference. As I have come to realise, loving those who love you makes no change to the world, it's loving the others that makes a difference.

the dalai lama says to remember that we are all the same. we all want happiness and to be free of pain and suffering. this is an idea that is almost mantra-like for me. in my personal application of this idea, i often repeat to myself while i work:

the same sun shines down upon us all.

It's simple Debbie, you just don't fight. Ghandi was good at that. You love your enemies, you look at them with love in your eyes. When they give you @#%$, ask them what's really bothering them. All our so-called enemies are sons/daughters, brothers/sisters, mothers/fathers, uncles/aunts, friends.

Another thing I've learnt is that Giving and expecting something back is not loving - it's bartering/trading.

I wish I had some great ideas for it all but unfortunately there always seems to be a party that does not want peace

Gandhi stood for non-violence. He achieved his goals through peaceful means, even though it meant tremendous personal sacrifice.

Mark, if someone else doesn't want peace, how much would it cost to walk away? Self-defence is a different thing, but how do we stop being the initiator of violence and destruction, or even, how do we break a cycle...

We stop initiating violence by stopping initiating violence. By loving and being loving.

Cycles can be broken. Indirect negotiation for 2 parties who both feel they are right is very good.

To get to the crux of the issue......

How should one respond to violence?

Justified or unjustified... - is it wise to respond to violence with violence?

Drooly..That is an awesome question about ignoring it....I wish i had a realistic answer for that one....If you continued to slap me once every 10 seconds I am sure no matter how hard i tried eventually I would have to slap you back...kind of like the bully syndrome I guess

How to encourage world peace? Force everyone to see the horrific results of war.

These things continue because people are shielded from it all. And I think that is wrong. When a nation sees it's soldiers return home in coffins, it invariably loses the taste for war. And it's the young and stupid who die, not the older and wiser power holders.

Hopefully the internet will play it's part in showing the reality of war. We are seeing it in action already. Information is now flowing freely. We are seeing the abuse and also the murder in Iraq.

The Nick Berg video is the most powerful current example. I really hope everyone watches it, because it is not easily forgotten.
