ok folks, as some of you know, the tibetan monks visited my town last week and i of course spent every minute i could with them. i took a few pictures (duh) and spent a bunch of hours last night uploading them fer your amusement and education and hopefully inspiration. i tried to give more background on what you're seeing this time in lieu of just a bunch of pictures. also there's a few video clips to download if you feel like it (they're kind of big though as i didn't make them with the internet in mind- oh, also they're really horrid in terms of camera work, especially the sweeping one.)

i haven't finished the cham ones yet, so that link won't take you anywhere until this weekend. i'm doing something bigger with the cham pictures and it's taking some time to think out what i want to say, so i already know the cham link doesn't really do anything.

other than the cham thing, if there's something wacky, lemme know. i have lots more photos but didn't want to flood the thing with pic after pic, so i tried to restrain myself this year.

so come check out the PEACE MANDALA photos (the amitayus mandala ones too if you don't remember them from last year)

Those are cool pics, Bud.

What's the deal with the Panchen Lama and the Dalai Lama? I know the Chinese have attempted to set up their own Dalai Lama to discredit the one currently in Tibet. Is this another sect with another Lama?

excellent question and that was part of why i haven't posted my other pictures yet, i'm explaining all that still. when i do it'll be more detailed and interesting (probably be saturday), but here's a quick explanation:

the deal is this..... in tibet there's the dalai lama and the panchen lama. the panchen lama is responsible for protecting, liberating and enlightening tibetans, and the dalai lama is the overall leader of the country. they live in seperate places entirely dalai lama in lhasa and panchen lama in tashi lhunpo monastery (i forget where that was exactly before the communists did their thing to it)

anyway, the deal with the two lamas is this.... they are always incarnations of themselves, as in when dalai lama dies, he is reincarnated and then discovered and reinstalled in power. same with the panchen lama. so.... the panchen lama was born april 25, 1989 and the dalai lama chose him as the panchen lama on may 11 1995. six days later, the chinese communists abducted him and he's not been seen since. they claim they have him in captivity, then they deny it, then they claim it again. BUT, what they did was to bring forth a totally different person and say THIS is the real panchen lama. the tibetans will not and can not accept this person because only the dalai lama can choose him.

why did the chinese communists do that? because with the two high lamas, one is older and one is younger, and it's been like that a long time, and so when one dies, the other is still here and chooses the new incarnation. see? so if the government owns the panchen lama, then they will eventually own the dalai lama also and then tibet will be completely erased from the world.

thanks chris. i love taking pictures. close ups are my favorite thing to do, i find endless fascination in looking very closely at things (which is odd because i'm hyper-claustrophobic).

thanks for looking, and hopefully tonight or tomorrow i'll post the cham pics. here's a preview of one of them though:

this is a representation of one of my favorite protector boddhisattvas, Yamantaka:

Interesting story, Bud.

So the panchen lama that showed up is the one placed there by the Chinese? Or did the Dalai Lama pick another one?

Love that dragon pic. I'll also go check out the Selena pics.
