Quote: how about that one with the shark in the background!
Debbie, I googled the photographer's name (Kurt Jones) and came up with this interesting page:
Kurt Jones - alleged surfer with shark
Quote: That lightning one is INCREDIBLE! And the cloud on the mountain. Amazing. So where do these best photographs come from???
They are pretty cool, Chris! Looks to my eye a bit like some of the pics may have been enhanced with FX/Photoshop. However a photographer can also get amazing pics just using the right filters, angles and existing light when shooting. I love good photography, especially black&white pics.
Great visuals here, Mike!

All of them are astounding!

You couldn't tell by what I know, lol. Minnesota is pretty landlocked in the middle of the US. Though I've been to both coasts, I think the only place I've seen a shark is at "SeaWorld" when I was in San Deigo. A local zoo does dolphin shows, tho.
Pobably the most sad, but inspiring, stories this year re:surfers and sharks is of Bethany Hamilton, a 13 year old girl who is a competive surfer. A shark came out of nowhere and tore off her left arm while she was on her board. 10 weeks later, she's back to surfing meets. I think the lass is amazing.

I think the "Holding the sun" pic here is a great composition photo.

Quote: I saw a lot of the girl on TV when I was in the US. Truly amazing.
Yeah, I imagine there will be a book & a movie about her, but she deserves the attention. Young girls looking for a role model should forget Britney and keep this lass in mind!
Quote: How about that mountain climber guy who cut of his arm to save himself? now THAT is superhuman. My GOD! I don't know if I'd ever have the guts to do that.
The instinct to survive is astounding, I suppose we've all heard how a trapped animal will chew off a leg to escape the trap. But the guy must possess incredible cool under pressure to self-amputate and still manage to survive.
I think people can have "superhuman" capabilities that sometimes surface in emergency situations. Like the stories of a mom who finds the strength to lift a car that her child is trapped under. Adenalin and a focused will can be an awesome combination!
