Quote: I also don't like using racial words and justifying it by saying if you use it you 'disarm' it.
Yup, I think the best way to disarm is to not use the weapon - not by trying to make harmless bullets.
Being human, we will have the heated exchanges with some 'language' used, but I don't believe it should be intentional.
And I think you have a really good point, Chris, in that some folks might not catch (or appreciate) it when terms are even innocently used. Sometimes it might be an iffy call - but when we're talking negative racial/ethnic comments specifically, that's something to avoid if possible.
Probably the best way to decide - is it the way someone would usually address those whom are *whatever* in real life?
e.g. If someone were to ask a black person next to him/her in a restaurant if s/he could borrow the salt from the black fellow's table, would the person (calmly, with no anger and innocently) use the 'N' word? If it would be wrong in that case, it probably would be in public forums.

I didn't pick on the other names because this one refered directly to me. But Blacks have been killed for being black, and indians/pakistanis/bangladeshis etc etc have been killed for being "Pakis", etc etc etc. When my mother's family first moved to UK in the 60s, my uncle was tied up to a fence upside down and left there; and I've had to put up with racism for years and years and still do. I cannot begin to tell you how SICK I am of colour comparisons and insinuations, people with lousy english being surprised at my english. GAH.
So I don't like the name calling, even in jest. And I would not call myself Paki either, because I'm Indian (well mixed anyway). Neither will I say I'm an old and wrinkled bag, because I'm not. I therefore do not appreciate it when someone else says it, but would appreciate it even less, were it true.
I do know that Asian violence in the UK is getting worse and worse these days. Does anyone know why this is? (serious question).
