I know you told me this before, but I can't find it....

What is your typical set-up when playing?

I'm trying to improve my tone...(A Strat through a Roland VGA-5)

I've had this amp for about 6 months, and while it gives me exactly the tone I need for my backing rhythm guitar parts, I can't even make it come close to that soaring sound you get with your leads........

I know you play mainly Les Pauls....

What I would like to know is your preferred amp, settings, and pedals.......

Oh well....... it's hard to explain remotely...

Well... you know that I play usually over a stereo-setup of two Hughes&Kettner 100W TriAmp's (Tubes) with 4x12" Marshall Cabinets.

However... it isn't neccessary and I get a similiar tone,

of the sort you want to know, by taking this little Fender 112 Tube Amp...

...using the "hot input/channel" of course....

...and then using the formula:

Treble: 12 o'clock position

Mid: full clockwise

Bass 10 o'clock position

Pre-Amp-Gain: 12 o'clock position

Master... as needed.... half throttle best.......

This works with most tube amps.

Transistor Amps don't suit my sound-feeling........

Tube amps seem to be the answer.....

They can cry and scream with such warmth......

Looks LOUD!

Drooly... tube amps are the only way to go, when talking

about smooth distortion.

For clean sounds, transistor and hybrid amps sometimes are

even the better choice.

I use sometimes a Dunlop Cry-Baby Wah

I knew I heard a wah....

And that's the thing - I have digital distortion built in as an effect on my amp, but the overtone harmonics that happen with the distortion are off-key, and hurt my ears....

It seems that with tube distortion, the overtones are in tune....

Tube amps are the only way to go, in my opinion, but of course, I play blues. I use an old (early 60's) Danelectro Explorer. No effects. A strat or my old Kawai (big fat hollow body). If I play outside where I need more volume or in some rooms where I need a little cleaner sound, I use a home built Fender that has an old (early 60's) Tremolux head in a 2-12 cabinet. No effects with that amp either, except sometimes I use a Hughes-Kettner tube preamp to beef it up a little. I took that little preamp to India, where I was forced to play through some goofy solid state amps. It warmed them up considerably.
