The USA is spending billions and will spend billions more to colonize Mars. If this planet lasts 100 more years I bet that there will be US citizens living on Mars around that time frame. Who will Mars belong to?

HAHAHA Phil makes a American thread out of the issue
Well... to disturb your illusions a little bit....
In the moment, a European Spacecraft is underway with far more sophisticated equipment and high-resolution x-ray cameras (which can actually look 5,000 meters deep under the Mars surface) than the American mission, which was delayed again with rather old-fashioned equipment.
The "Mars-Express" mission will arrive the 26th. of December this year, incl. the new constructed multi-functional vehicle "Beagle-2".

(click the pic for more info )
I don't know if they have a European flag on board for installation after landing
But furthermore... the Chinese work on a Mars mission with Astronauts and made far more progress than the Americans so far.
But one of the biggest problems is, that you will need in average 7 months to reach Mars, if the constellation of the surrounding planets fits. But you have to wait 2 years to FLY BACK (because of the complicated constellations of the planets and the needed acceleration from them) and then need again at least 7 months to arrive on earth IF you don't make any navigation mistake. This means, the average Astronaut will spend 3 years and 2 months, just to say "hello" on Mars for a few days.
The problems with oxygen, eating, water and so on are not solved for such a long period of time, without the possibility of "catering" flights (that's how they usually do it with Spacelab/ISS kind of space-stations).
But the biggest problem is, that over such a long period of time, the human body reacts to the missing gravity in space with deforming/degenerating bones, swollen brains and misplaced body fluids (artificial gravity is not well developed, since no scientist understands the principles of gravity at all... STILL) and, maybe more important, with psychological problems known as "Space-Sickness". It's not that harmless, because long term studies during Spacelab- and other missions showed, that Astronauts tend to "flip out" after some time. Experts do mention frequently, that nobody can tell, what happens to an Astronaut who is not only for years in space, but who does see the earth no more. That's a problem the Astronauts on the moon and in the Spacestations do not have. If you lose over years the optical contact to your "home"-planet, you may flip out
Anyway, I'm convinced that the Chinese will not hesitate to push their program and simply give a damn if their Astronauts may have a chance to return to earth again. That's something I don't see for the American Mars-Program, or do you think they send AMERICAN Astronauts away, knowing that they have below zero chances to see mother earth alive again???? )))) Space is big man and full of Adventures
Meanwhile the German Max-Planck-Institute, which was involved in the first successful construction of a so called Ionic-Engine (the current European Mars mission uses a Ionic-Engine, because you would need thousands of tons of oxygen to burn any other energy source in space where you have no air and chemicals to react), does work on a Plasma-Engine, which probably would be good enough (theoretically) to accelerate a spacecraft over a long period of time above 500miles/sec., but neither has anybody a clue how a spacecraft has to be constructed nowadays to make it not simply burst during acceleration nor does anybody know how to navigate at this speed around particles in space.
Even a piece of the size of a grain of sand would simply destroy a spacecraft, when hitting it (or simply the glass/windows). Not to speak from the fact, that no human being would survive such a acceleration, which is still way below the speed of light... Ever had a fly hitting your windshield at high speed? Can you avoid it at 80miles/h.?
So I say, we will see a successfull Mars mission with Astronauts, but they will be not American over the next 100 years (Nostradamus announced a successful manned Mars-Mission in one of his prophecies for the 2040's, where mankind will discover human remains on Mars..... )

DAMN....I knew there was a reason I decided NOT to become a pilot...
You're right...the first truly successful Mars mission, to me, will be whatever group of money-hungry international corporations, be they American, German, French, Chinese, or whomever, can muster up enough money to make it possible....I don't think the taxpayers of ANY country are willing to foot the bill for that kind of trip....not at today's prices...and unfortunately you're probably right about the Chinese....who gives a damn if they come back...they'll all be enshrined as heroes, the poor bastards/bastettes...modern day Kamakaze, only the Chinese version...but by God, they'll be FIRST!!
The Multinationals will come up with some sort of plan to recoup their expenses through resource sales, exploitation, etc. The Rich get Richer and the Poor get Poorer...Phil is right in that respect to me...ultimately Big Multinational Corporations run this World, and they are not all American by a longshot...it's a Cosmopolitan thing, baby!!
Gotta love that Bottom Line!!
