To a girlfriend's 14 year old daughter.......
What a joy that was...!!!
The girl is all ears, and aching to learn music......
What a pleasure to show her stuff...!
I showed her how to tune properly, and how to play an open C chord.........
poor kid - her fingers were sore at the end of the session - but she loved it......
Every Tuesday - 4:30 p.m. - we do another session....
I'm doing this for free..(Her Mom isn't wealthy..) - but it's SO much fun teaching kids who want to learn....

so true......
I think the important thing is to make it fun for them.....
This girl (Jordan) has a friend who just started learning drums, and they're already talking about starting a band.....
So very cool.....!!

You know what an open C is....
G,C,E,G,C,E - in the first position.
Tuning properly?
A=440, all strings in relative tune, using harmonics.....
I don't want her to use a digital tuner until her ear is more developed... - I gave her an A440 tuning fork, and she has to learn to tune with that.
Also teaching her how to string a guitar correctly, so the strings don't slip... - how to stretch new strings....

As I said, I was a private guitar instructor when I was in high school...in the SEVENTIES! (NOT the thirties!)

I could never use one of those. My ears are too good!

Digital tuners are useful in a noisy club - where it's hard to hear.
But the ability to hear proper intonation is like a muscle - it requires exercise to develop, and stay in form.
In a quiet environment, there should be no need for a tuner.
That's critical for me with this student - that she develops an ear for intonation.
That's where it all begins....

Practice, Chris, practice....
Tune by ear, then check the results with a tuner.
Practice, practice, practice.
It's not always fun practising.... - but the results are utterly delicious.....
