A friend has given me a cassette tape to transfer to CD - I'm going to record the audio (as ONE mp3 file) on my computer and then convert the mp3 file into an audio CD.

He's a DJ so it's all mixed music so very appropriate for just ONE track on the CD. The cassette is 45 minutes long each side.

QUESTION:

How big can a mp3 file be before it's too big to convert into audio for a CD?

I'm no expert, babe, but an mp3 is compressed 11 to 1 from a wav, i.e., if the wav is 660 MB, than the mp3 will be about 60 mb....

Therefore, if you have an mp3 that is 60 mb, it will expand to about 660 mb when you convert it to wav before burning it to a disc, and an 80 minute disc will hold 700 mb....so your mp3 could be about 63 mb max... :ft

Pretty sure that's right...

I will aim for 60Mb max which I'm guessing is around 60 minutes?

That'd be about right, I think...

Course, then you start getting into the kbps the mp3 is encoded into...128, 96, etc., and if it were 96 kbps it would be a smaller size in mb....I guess though that when converted to CD quality wav it would be the same size no matter what kbps the mp3 was.... :larree

I was thinking of encoding at 128 even though it's from tape? Is that OK?? *scratching head*

Hi, BBchris,

Normally it's not a matter what size the mp3 file is. Normally the burning tool converts the mp3 file into a 44khz stereo file if you want to burn an audio cd. It doesn't matter at all how big the file was before, the only thing that matters is the length. So if you have a 60mb mp3 that takes 74 minutes your cd might be full the same way it's been a 600mb one.

I think I've hit that problem - I've got a 45 minute mp3 track which is only 42 Mb but I can't seem to write it.

It says:

Error Writing to disc

Power Calibration area is full

Iomega Hot Burn - it's a Iomega CD burner. Would that be a brand you're familiar with?

Chris, Sins did this for me with a bunch of songs. Contact him because he discoved a program that takes all the hiss out of the cass. tape transfer. :kiss

Actually, my CDRW is and Iomega MagicWriter - using Nero as the software.

Is it a USB CDRW? If so, is it sharing a bus with anything else? If that's the case, maybe try unplugging the other USB peripherals/devices, so the CDRW alone uses the PC bandwidth.

of course, I'd look for natural breaks and try a quick fade out/in to create seperate, smaller tracks cuz I'm too lazy, hahaha!

I'm assuming that it's a new CD, not erased-rewritten?

Ron! It's the only thing plugged into that USB port (4 USB port thingy)

Do you have software to cut an mp3 file into say 4 sections for example?

I'm now going to see if I can do a regular burn!!

hahahaaha, Chris!

I'd convert it to a wav file and then use CoolEdit to edit/fade/fx and such and then save the edited file as both a new wav and , an mp3. (with the wav being the "master" as it were)

You can use CoolEdit 2000 for 30 days before the "save" function gives up the ghost.
