I started reading Satanic Verses ages ago - just because there was such a hoopla about it, but soon realised that Rushdie had a crummy sense of humour, so I trashed it after about 20 pages.....

was that sentence too long?

It certainly can't hurt, Debbie - but I don't know that a web-petiton will sway the tyrants in charge. As you've noted, this in the status quo of the uncivilized cultures unless/until a civilized culture comes along and puts the despots out of business:Zarmena

Unfortunately, the subsequent injection of anti-American bigotry du jour lends an air of disingenuity to the original call for signers. I believe that is more appropiate for the political rantings board.

But this is a good cause I believe most everyone would support. Good causes are beyond and above politics, so I think avoiding even the taint helps to gather "more flies". People should check to see if their individual nations have made a formal protest on this woman's behalf, though.

In 1980 the Saudis publicly beheaded one of their own princesses and her lover for a like crime. Caused an international tiff of sorts when the US Public Broadcasting System did a film on it. I found it referenced to here: Sharia Justice
