I saw some record industry stats which showed that, as a percentage of all records sold in the US, jazz has been steadily hanging around 3% over the last 10 years ('92-'01).

So I'm curious: who here listens to and enjoys any form of jazz (from trad to fusion to smooth and eveything in between) at least sometimes? I haven't hung out here before, I recognize some of the names here from other boards, but I figure this is a good neutral spot to post a question like that.

My impression is that most musicians on most boards I see are either into rock or electronic...

Funny though... the Jazz-Genre on MP3.com is one of the most busy ones, generating the most plays...

I know of artists in the Jazz-Genre with more than 10,000 daily plays.

Me personally, I LOVE Jazz :D :)

Here are some examples of my Jazz-Favorites on M3.com:

"Telling" by Stefan Pettersson

"Miles From Chicago" by the New York Horns

"Timeline" by Taylor Mesplé :)

Funny you should mention 3% Jazzy - while I really like some mainstream jazz, I would guess 3% to be the percentage of what I listen to.

Personally, I find jazz to be an intellectual form of music, while I tend to lean more towards the visceral....

Years ago I worked at a jazz club called Biddles here in Montreal, where I got to know Oliver Jones quite well. A fine, fine man. I really did enjoy his playing quite a bit....

Hey - you mentioned a wah pedal on the Blah Blah board.. - do horn players actually USE wah pedals? Do you know where I could hear some of that??????

Re the wah pedal on a horn... I can't think of a recent example offhand, but you certainly could put the mic through a wah or any stomp boxes, effects etc, why not? I think Miles did that kind of thing during his fusion period, kinda like the electric version of the old toilet plunger technique! An online horn player who does some interesting things with effects on his horn is Mike Fijal.

When I was playing in the 80's, at one point I put a bunch of distortion and delay on my trumpet on one of my demo tunes, trying to play the horn like it was a guitar lead, but when I played it for people, they didn't seem to relate to it too well!

I saw Pat Metheny last month - does that count? :banana

I like jazz when it's not too jazz-like- hahahahahaha I like big band sounds - lots of instruments playing together and all that 'do-be-do-be-do-do' nonsensical lyrical stuff. Thoroughly enjoyable. Like the up-tempo stuff. I like Thelonious Monk. :banana

Drooly, here's Mike Fijal's mp3.com site: mp3.com/mikefijal - he describes his music as "space jazz", I just describe it as "damn good!"

Thanks, Jazz - I'm listening to Dark Angel 2 - wild!!!!

I think I hear him doing some wah stuff in there....!!!

That stuff blows my mind completely.... I never learned a lot of theory, so I'm always amazed by jazz players...

Thanks again - that was a hoot!! (pardon the pun...)
