U.S. Encouraged by Vietnam Vote :

Officials Cite 83% Turnout Despite Vietcong Terror

by Peter Grose, Special to the New York Times (9/4/1967: p. 2)

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3-- United States officials were surprised and heartened today at the size of turnout in South Vietnam's presidential election despite a Vietcong terrorist campaign to disrupt the voting.

According to reports from Saigon, 83 per cent of the 5.85 million registered voters cast their ballots yesterday. Many of them risked reprisals threatened by the Vietcong.

The size of the popular vote and the inability of the Vietcong to destroy the election machinery were the two salient facts in a preliminary assessment of the nation election based on the incomplete returns reaching here.

. . . A successful election has long been seen as the keystone in President Johnson's policy of encouraging the growth of constitutional processes in South Vietnam....

sound familar?

It's what happened before that, Gal, that decided the end. America pulled out it's forces before they finished their job. A good lesson for today - learned the hard way!

Gal, freedom is a process that Europe really can't comprehend - not because they're not very bright or anything nasty. It just has zero experience in the area from which to draw the vision.

Europe conquered and colonized from South America to Africa to the Far East.

But in spite of Europe itself being given freedom (twice in the last century alone), it has never acted to set a nation free. On the contrary, Chirac, titular head of the EU, just recently sent troops to Africa to gun down "the natives" who had the audicity to demand that Europeans get out.

What's interesting is here is how consistently anti-America (and wrong) the New York Times has been down the years. As I mentioned or alluded to before, this type of phenom is unique to America where the press is not state-controlled. (See pics below)

Contrast to Europe where large fines can be assessed on those who would dare criticize it's "leaders". In Germany alone, just publicly questioning if the leader dyes (colors) his hair is considered a crime.

Dissenting parties (if they can be found in Europe) can be declared illegal and Orwellian "thought crime laws" are the norm throughout. So it's understandable that trying to get through the fines, state-controlled media, state-nannyism and the constant pressure to subscribe to Euro-"GroupThink" is not very condusive to "thinking outside the box".

On this other side of the pond we prefer that our ice cream comes in many flavours, even though an individual might prefer one flavour over all the others.

You have the nerve to insinuate that the EU-Europeans do not have freedom?

Colonies that have, one by one, been given their freedom!!!!

Sweden gave Norway its freedom, does that count?

Oh, well you mean that Europe do not have a standing taskforce ready to 'liberate' any country from any leader it has once installed through a coupe and now has grown inconvenient.

Here you go again mistaking a German national issue for a European problem. Imagine being lectured about party systems from one whos experience is narrowed down to a two party system.

"if they can be found in Europe"

Yes, they can. We had no Joseph McCarthy.

Yup, 50.000 dead Nicaraguans is a small price to pay for serving your country by breaking its laws.
