Colin Powell to quit Bush cabinet

US Secretary of State Colin Powell is resigning but is expected to stay in his post until a successor is found.

The White House confirmed it had accepted the resignation of Mr Powell, along with three other members of President Bush's cabinet.

The others are expected to be Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, and Education Secretary Rod Paige.

It is not known how long Mr Powell will remain in office, although one official was quoted by the Associated Press as saying his departure date is likely to be some time in January.

"I believe that now that the election is over the time has come for me to step down as Secretary of State and return to private life," Mr Powell said in his resignation letter, dated 12 November.

State department officials said he submitted his resignation to President George W Bush on Friday, and informed his staff on Monday morning.

"He said he was staying on until a successor is confirmed and on board," an official was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying.

He was often seen as a moderate in a cabinet full of hawks, who sometimes struggled to get his voice heard.

Looks like the last 'moderate' members of the Bush administration leave voluntarily. :muede

yes mr burn if i might be so bold sir i would suggest that mr powell is a moderate who might feel a little gulity about recent pilitical moves by the usa

our nigerian president olesegun obasanjo got rid of his moderate ministers sometimes by more brutal methods and he supported the evil liberian mr charles taylor who was taking bribes from the american corporations and was allowed by them to rule some lands rich in diamonds and other minerals so that he could start violence and wars around west africa and destabilise the governments so that they could not be strong enough to pass laws regulating the corporations activities there sir

sir notice how the americans did not send troops to liberate people in west africa who were suffering as much violence as the iraqis did from mr hussein it was a move by the americans to allow the evil mr charles taylor to rule certain lands and earn his wealth in special trade deals so that it would be difficult for the internatioonal community and mr kofi annan etc to put the fingers on the american corporations as the real culprits and troublemakers here sir

as you can see mr burn this is not really a very sophisticated ploy but it seems to be too sophisticated for the people who vote for mr bush and mr blair etc unless of course they just do not want to see what is before their very eyes sir because it would threaten their beliefs which are rigid like those of the nigerian tribespeople who cannot learn things easily because they are stupid but only because their beliefs do not allow them to become intelligent because they fill their heads with truths and certainties etc instead of hypotheses and stop them seeking out facts that would prove hypotheses rather than just confirm beliefs

Neither did the United Nations ever send troups to West Africa. Personally, I am glad Powell is out and Rice will replace him.

We will run Rice against Hillary in 2008 and crush her like a bug! Powel never intended to be here for 2. He is a politico like the rest... help Bush get elected and then help position Rice for 2008....:bmutant

He didn't seem so peaceloving at the UN when he was making his arguments for the invasion of Iraq..., I loved the photos of the missle-launcher discoverd in Iraq, the one that they built first and then later put up a building to hide it from the world, very convincing allright..

You don't lead an army into a quagmire..
