Defense Ministry spokesman said Defense Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski told the Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza that Poland planned a 40 percent reduction in January, followed by complete withdrawal by the end of the year.

Poland heads multi-national forces in the central south area of Iraq, where it commands about 1,700 troops from Ukraine and smaller numbers from Bulgaria, Lithuania and El Salvador.

Looks like Bush has to think even more in the next TV debate

when trying to lookup 'partners' in the war on Iraq. :bonk

Poland to Reduce Force In Iraq

10-4-2004

Deutsche Welle

Poland will significantly reduce its number of troops in Iraq by the end of 2005, the country's defense minister said on Monday.

In the run-up to the US-led invasion of Iraq, Poland was one of America's staunchest supporters. All of Poland's major political parties supported the war and 2,500 troops were sent to help with the war effort. Those soldiers now lead an 8,000 strong multinational force, which controls south-central Iraq.

But Poland's Defense Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski was quoted in Monday's issue of the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza as saying that Poland would significantly reduce its commitment to the region. According to the report, Poland will reduce its forces in Iraq by 40 percent -- from 2,500 to 1,500 -- by the end of 2005.

"That does not mean, however, that if a stabilization mission was continued, Polish troops would be completely pulled out from Iraq," said Szmajdzinkski.

By allying itself with the US in the hopes of becoming a leader of so-called "New Europe," Poland entered the EU on May 1st of this year at odds with Germany and Fra

A 40% reduction by the end of 14 months from now. Apparently not in a real big hurry.

Leaders of New Europe?

Hmmmmmmm.

I always thought war was over when peace prevailed. I don't think there's peace yet in Iraq. Say an extra prayer tonight for the children of Iraq.

By your definition, chris, there are multiple wars currently going on all over the world. For the majority of Iraqis, there is peace...especially when compared to the reign of terror under Saddam.
