The BBC has just informed us that a former CIA executive has condemned the recent invasion of Iraq as illegal and based on a tissue of lies concocted by the Pentagon and shady government advisors, who systematically by-passed or distorted bona fide CIA intelligence reports. In Britain, it was announced that Prime Minister Blair is being placed under increasing pressure by members of his own party to explain the failure to find weapons of mass destruction that could be 'used within 45 minutes'. There is a huge can of worms to be opened here, and if the can-opener works just you watch them come wriggling out .....

It's worse that a fantasy, Debbie. When a population becomes so heavily absorbed in a mass-mediated universe and starts acting on its meanings it become a hyper-reality (Baudrillard). Even more terrifying. :alarm

The thing is with most Americans, they don't care if they were/are lied to, as long as they have their sense of false security and a sense of being the greatest country in the world. I think we've had more deaths from the enemy since we declared victory. Most of the deaths before victory were accidents, now that we've won, soldiers are actually being killed by Iraqis. But that's of no consequence because we 'won'!

... it's going to be like Northern Ireland, only on a massive scale. That's been a battle-zone since Cromwell invaded it in the 17th century - it's what happens when you invade other people's countries. :stress The 'class war' in England can be traced back to the Norman invasion of 1066!! :warrior

Whether Bush knows the whereabouts of Northern Ireland is, of course, another question ......

:evil

In Britain The Guardian reported yesterday that in the months leading up to the invasion of Iraq, teams of government intelligence agants lobbied and pressured wavering backbench Labour MPs, using dossiers of falsified information about the extent of Iraq's military threat. This STINKS ..... it STINKS LIKE ROTTEN FISH!!! As Robin Cook said during his resignation, history will judge this as one of the greatest acts of conniving chicanery ever performed by governments.

From CNN, today.

Quote:
One inquiry already has been set up into how the British government presented intelligence data. Blair said Wednesday the parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee will conduct a second inquiry, but it would be done in secret by a panel appointed by Blair.
:wgrin That will win back the credibility. Riiiight.

Gotta love this one.

Quote:
Bush administration: Intelligence data on Iraq was not manipulated

Quote:
"I personally never asked anybody in the intelligence community to change a single thing that they presented, and I am not aware of any other official in this administration who did that," John Bolton, undersecretary for arms control at the State Department, told lawmakers at a hearing of the House International Relations Committee.

What Mr Bolton means and what CNN should have written is; Undersecretary John Bolton: Intelligence data on Iraq was not manipulated by me. (although that could suggest that someone else did it...though as the current header goes the Bush admin says it knows that the "Intelligence data" (and I use the denomination in its broadest sense) was not manipulated by anyone, even before it landed in the lap of the CIA.

And why not? The Bush admin seems to know a lot more than the CIA.

Pentagon: WMD report consistent with U.S. case

www.cnn.com/2003/US/06/06/sprj.irq.wmd/index.html

Summary: 'No reliable information' on new Iraqi weapons.

• "There is no reliable information on whether Iraq is producing and stockpiling chemical weapons or where Iraq has -- or will -- establish its chemical warfare agent production facilities."

• "Unusual munitions transfer activity in mid-2002 suggests that Iraq is distributing CW [chemical weapons] munitions in preparation for an anticipated attack."

• "Iraq retains all the chemicals and equipment to produce the blister agent mustard, but its ability for sustained production of G-series nerve agents and VX is constrained by its stockpile of key chemical precursors and by the destruction of all known CW production facilities during Operation Desert Storm and during subsequent [U.N.] inspections. In the absence of external aid, Iraq will likely experience difficulties in producing nerve agents at the rate executed before Operation Desert Storm."

• "Iraq is steadily establishing a dual-use industrial chemical infrastructure that provides some of the building blocks necessary for production of chemical agents."

• "Baghdad is rebuilding portions of its chemical production infrastructure under the guise of a civilian need for pesticides, chlorine and other legitimate chemical products, giving Iraq the potential for a small 'breakout' production capability."

• "Although we lack any direct information, Iraq probably possesses CW agent in chemical munitions, possibly including artillery rockets, artillery shells, aerial bombs and ballistic missile warheads. Baghdad also probably possesses bulk chemical stockpiles, primarily containing precursors, but that also could consist of some mustard agent or stabilized VX."

• "Iraq is assessed to possess biological agent stockpiles that may be weaponized and ready for use. The size of those stockpiles is uncertain and subject to debate. The nature, size and condition of those stockpiles is also unknown."
