Girl, 10, shot as she sat in her class

(CNN) Tuesday, October 12, 2004 Posted: 6:28 PM EDT (2228 GMT)

GAZA CITY (CNN) -- A 10-year-old girl is critically ill after being hit by a bullet while attending school in Gaza, Palestinian security and hospital sources said.

Palestinian security and hospital sources said Ghadir Mathmar was struck in the chest and stomach as she sat in class at her U.N.-run school in the south Gaza refugee camp of Khan Yunis.

The Israeli military said it fired back at the source of shells fired on its troops. They said it is possible the girl was hit by Israeli fire and the military is investigating.

The incident comes as the Israeli military conducts a criminal investigation into the shooting of a 13-year-old Palestinian girl last Tuesday in Rafah.

In that incident, Iman al-Hams was killed as she ran toward Israeli soldiers, according to the girl's mother.

"She was on her way to school. There was a lot of shooting that morning and when she heard it, she became hysterical. Instead of running back home she ran towards the soldiers," said Hwaydeh Salman al-Hams.

The Israeli military said initially that soldiers believed the girl was carrying a bomb in her school bag and said rules of engagement had been followed.

The matter became a controversy in Israel when it was determined the girl was hit by as many as 20 bullets and two Israeli soldiers said their commander repeatedly shot her.

The soldiers contacted Israel's largest newspaper, Yediot Ahrohnot.

"I was sure she was 12 or maybe younger. I reported it over the two-way radio," one soldier told the newspaper.

He said shots were fired and the girl fell to the ground.

"Then our commander shot her twice. He made sure she was dead and then, I don't know why, but he decided to turn back towards her body and unloaded a round of bullets into it ... this was the most revolting thing I have ever seen as a soldier," the Israeli said.

Human rights groups say at least 30 Palestinian children have been killed since Israel launched an incursion into Gaza more than two weeks ago.

Israel is failing in its duty to avoid innocent civilian casualties, UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has said.

Mr Straw said the Israeli Government were also failing to meet their legal obligation to ensure responses to terrorism were proportionate.

He was speaking as Israel widened a two-week operation in Gaza.

The minister said he recognised the operation was in response to Qassam rocket attacks but it had killed 115 Palestinians, including many children.

The Israeli operation continued on Wednesday, with troops thrusting deeper into the town of Beit Lahiya.

The operation is the deadliest since the start of the Palestinian uprising four years ago.

In a statement issued by the Foreign Office, Mr Straw said: "The UK unreservedly condemns all acts of terrorism including the firing of Qassam rockets.

"But Israel has an obligation under international law to ensure that its response to terrorism is proportionate to the threat it faces, as well as a duty to avoid innocent civilian casualties and humanitarian suffering.

"It is not meeting those obligations."

Don't get me wrong...I feel very bad for the little girl and her family. But the Palestinians started this when they began brainwashing their kids to carry bombs...which they now do. So, it was the Palestinians who opened this tragic door of having no respect for the lives of children, and their future.

You're a bible-thumping half-witted liar. A purveyor of untruths. The Palestinians own that land and everyone with a cursory knowledge of history knows that. Screw you and your stupid religious texts, they're fairy tales for kids and dumb peasants. They have no bearing on reality. The Palestinians own that land legally, Britain and the UN had no right to grant the 'Israelis' any of it at all in 1948, and the USA has no right arming a bunch of murdering land-grabbers with expensive military equipment.

You're a liar and an igoramus. Christians, Zionists and corporate capitalists, the biggest fucking trouble-makers and war-mongers the world has ever seen. You beat the Muslims and the communists hands down, you've caused a hundred times more strife and death throughout history than those two less-than-perfect groups put together.

Why don't you just shut up and read some proper books?

So when that Israeli officer shot down that schoolgirl at her bench (and emptied the magazine in her body for good measure) it was, in fact, a pre-emptive strike?

Who knows what she'd have grown up to be. A human bomb or even a lawyer!

Galmin, all DT is interested in is perpetuating the filthy lie that the Palestinian terrorists started all this trouble. The illegal expansion of the Zionist state onto Palestinian land does not even figure in his one-dimensional mind.

No doubt Steve will try to discount it in some fashion rather than admit he was talking out of an alternative oriface...but here it is anyway.

Do you not recognize crude Islamophobic propaganda when you see it?

Are you completely, utterly, irredeemably fucking stupid?

Do you believe everything your Christian-Zionist rulers shove in front of your face. Are you utterly incapable of independent thought? Can you not recognize your own indoctrination?

The Palestinians are fighting against the overwhelming odds of a US-supplied Zionist war-machine for the land that is their birthright, and without which they have nothing.

The arseholes who made that film should be arrested and tried for inciting racial hatred.

Israel a 'democracy'? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Israeli cleared of shooting teen

Saturday, October 16, 2004 Posted: 0328 GMT (1128 HKT)

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- An Israeli army commander has been cleared in the killing of a 13-year-old Palestinian girl, the Israel Defense Forces said.

The man -- who was accused by his own soldiers of repeatedly shooting the girl's body to make sure she was dead -- was cleared of wrongdoing after an internal military investigation.

Israeli soldiers shot the girl at a checkpoint near Rafah, in southern Gaza on October 5.

According to the IDF, the soldiers believed at the time that she was trying to plant a bomb she was carrying in her schoolbag.
