The race between the two remains essentially unchanged even among likely voters, at 48 percent to 48 percent. But the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll shows clear deflation for Kerry across a range of measures: Strong enthusiasm for his candidacy has dropped by 16 points (almost precisely what it gained after Boston), and his personal favorability rating has lost eight points to hit a new low.



Bush, meanwhile, has chipped five points off the number of Americans who see him unfavorably.

Democratic leaders urge Kerry campaign changes

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Democratic leaders, increasingly concerned that John Kerry's presidential campaign is adrift, are urging the presidential nominee to make changes in his staff before Labor Day, according to some party sources.



If not, said one party strategist, "it could be too late." Sources say major changes could come at the campaign's highest level.



The concern, according to these sources, is that Kerry has failed to effectively respond to attacks from Republicans and criticism of his military service in Vietnam, particular ads from a group calling itself Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

THEN AND NOW....I've mentioned before that one of the reasons you shouldn't trust the SwiftVets group is that until recently a lot of them said nice things about John Kerry — and then suddenly refreshed their memories early this year. Some of those nice things were said to reporters during the past few years, some were said in official reports 36 years ago, while in other cases official documents directly contradict what they're saying today.



This probably isn't a complete list, but here's a quick recap of why nobody with a brain should trust a word they say:



Roy Hoffman, today: "John Kerry has not been honest."

Roy Hoffman, 2003: "I am not going to say anything negative about him — he's a good man."



Adrian Lonsdale, today: "He lacks the capacity to lead."

Adrian Lonsdale, 1996: "He was among the finest of those Swift boat drivers."



George Elliot, today: "John Kerry has not been honest about what happened in Vietnam."

George Elliot, 1996: "The fact that he chased an armed enemy down is something not to be looked down upon, but it was an act of courage."



Larry Thurlow, today: "...there was no hostile enemy fire directed at my boat or at any of the five boats operating on the river that day."

Larry Thurlow's Bronze Star citation, 1969: "...all units began receiving enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire from the river banks."



Dr. Louis Letson, today: "I know John Kerry is lying about his first Purple Heart because I treated him for that injury."

Medical records, 1968: "Dr. Letson's name does not appear on any of the medical records for Mr. Kerry. Under 'person administering treatment' for the injury, the form is signed by a medic, J. C. Carreon, who died several years ago."



Grant Hibbard, today: "He betrayed all his shipmates. He lied before the Senate."

Hibbard's evaluation of Kerry, 1968: "Mr. Hibbard gave Mr. Kerry the highest rating of 'one of the top few' in three categories—initiative, cooperation and personal behavior. He gave Mr. Kerry the second-best rating, 'above the majority,' in military bearing."



They were either lying then or they're lying now. Take your pick. But either way, since there's no documentary evidence to back up their stories, the only thing going for them is their own personal credibility.

Tuesday August 31, 2004--For the second straight day, the Rasmussen Reports Presidential Tracking Poll shows President George W. Bush with 47% of the vote and Senator John Kerry with 46%. The Tracking Poll is updated daily by noon Eastern.



Over the past eight days, the candidates have been tied three times, Bush has been up by a single point four times, and Bush was ahead by 3-points for one day. This is the first time since April that Kerry has not been ahead at least once in any eight day stretch.



Our current Electoral College projection shows Bush with 213 Electoral Votes to 207 for Kerry. The magic number needed for victory is 270 Electoral Votes.



Looking back, on the morning that the Democratic National Convention began, Kerry was leading Bush by a single percentage point, 47% to 46%. Kerry received a two-point bounce from his convention that has since disappeared.

September 1, 2004--Forty-three percent (43%) of voters now say that President George W. Bush is doing a good or excellent job handling the economy.



That's up four points from a week ago and the most positive rating the President has received since John Kerry wrapped up the Democratic Presidential Nomination on Super Tuesday.



At the other extreme, 39% now rate the President's handling of the economy as poor. That's down four from last week. Since Super Tuesday, between 36% and 44% of voters have given the President poor ratings every single week.



On handling the Iraq situation, forty-six percent (46%) of Americans now give the President "good" or "excellent" marks. That's up three from last week and the highest marks the President has received during Election 2004.



Forty-one (41%) say the President is doing a poor job. That's down one point from a week ago.

Sept. 4, 2004 - Coming out of the Republican National Convention in New York, President George W. Bush now holds a 11-point lead over Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry (52 percent to 41 percent) in a three-way race, according to the latest NEWSWEEK poll. The poll was taken over two nights, both before and after Bush’s acceptance speech. Respondents who were queried only on Friday, after Bush’s speech, gave the Republican a 16-point lead over Kerry.



The 11-point lead represents a 13-point bounce for Bush since an Aug. 5 to Aug. 10 poll conducted by Newsweek’s pollster, Princeton Survery Research Associates, for the Pew Research Center. The president’s post-convention bounce was substantial vs. the two-point increase received by Kerry after last month’s Democratic National Convention and in line with the size of other post-convention bounces.



In late July, Kerry led the incumbent by 7 points. Removing independent candidate Ralph Nader from the mix actually has no significant effect on the spread between the other two candidates: Without Nader, Bush draws 54 percent of the vote, Kerry 43.
