I've watched em twice now, spellboud....stunned....amazed..
even though they did some odd things
Like...well...what Joseph Campbel wannabe decided to Through Aragorn into the river with a wolf and have him "rise again" to fight at healms deep?...I guess they were going for the dying and resurected king thing to show where he goes from being Strider to Aragorn, heir of the thrown of Gongor. Tolkien wrote it much better and with far more subtlty in the scene where Aragorn Takes the seeing stone from Gandalf when they part and says.."when have you ever known me to be hasty?"
hmmm
and, why were there woodland elves fighting on the walls of Helms Deep?...To my mind this trivializes the heroism of Legolas!!...he was the one Elven Arccher who stood by the cause of middle Earth!!.....that's the whole point!!..Legolas, side by side with a dwarf still amazed and touched by the cause while the other elves are heading to the west...
AND!!!
what the hell was that about Faramir taking Frodo and the ring to the white city????
this trvializes Faramir!!...he's the more clearsighted brother who, even upon discovering that frodo bears Isildors Bane chooses to aid him on his way rather than be seduced by the ring.....This is what sets him apart from Boramir!!....as is shown in Tolkiens eloquent lines for Faramir...like, "I love the arrow not for it's swifteness and the sword not for it's sharpness, but for what they can defend"
sigh...
still....I've never been more moved by film in my life....really...spellbound...and I suppose that writing a screenplay for an epic like this must be pretty daunting.

"what the hell was that about Faramir taking Frodo and the ring to the white city????"
The ONLY reason I can think of for this part of the screenplay would have been to add just a little more action for the character. And of course, the more battles the better !!!

I have a cinema round the corner from where I work, but rarely have the time to watch a movie. I've decided I'm going to make some more chill time for me this year.
I don't know how anything can compare with the book, but they did a damn sight better than what I was expecting the first time around. So I'm really looking forward to this one.
cheers
