It's an interesting question..
Personally, if I was in a relationship, I would hope that I would be my mate's "best" friend, regardless of sex.
If that were the case, I would have no problem at all with them having close friendships with anyone else. Again - regardless of sex....

That's what it comes down to, I think...
Being able to be really close to others, without sex or gender clouding the issue.
As you said.. - that has to be reserved for your one and only.....
If it works both ways, then you have a great relationship. The trust is there....

Assuming a heterosexual situation here, I'd say it's an indication of some deeper issue...not the cause of it.
