In the key of fake
Teen songbird Ashlee Simpson had a microphone malfunction on "Saturday Night Live" last night, scurrying off stage when a production glitch caught her lip-synching the wrong tune.
The pop star, younger sister of singer and TV star Jessica Simpson, sounded great belting out "Pieces of Me" in her first segment on the show. It was the same song that she butchered at August's MTV Music Video Awards, drawing withering reviews for a flat, out of key performance.
But the triumphant moment turned into a debacle when she came out to debut the song "Autobiography" for a second set. But whoever was responsible for piping in a studio-engineered rendition for Simpson to mouth screwed up, playing "Pieces" once again.
The raven-haired beauty hopped around briefly, then slinked off the stage as her hapless band half-heartedly faked away. It didn't take long for critics to vent their rage on Ashlee Simpson's official Web site.
"Finally, you're exposed for the fraud that you are," wrote an E-mail poster named drdrewby minutes after the embarrassing performance. "You have cheated your fans and people who actually thought that you had a lick of talent. You should quit the music business because you are now and always will be a complete and utter joke."
Said CowboyJeff99: "I knew she sounded like crap live, so I was 'wondering' what was going on when her voice sounded just like the radio edit."
When the cast of the live show came out to bid the audience good night, actor Jude Law tried to explain Simpson's slipup.
"What can I say folks, live TV," Law shrugged.
A still-humiliated Simpson apologized to her fans - and blamed her band for playing the wrong song.

Perfect.
The truth is exposed.
I love it when that happens.

It was pretty funny. I don't mind people lipsynching on a TV show, but when they pretend that it's live - that's a whole different matter!
Anyone remember Milli Vanilli?
Here's a link to a video clip of this flubbed lip-sync:
Ashley Simpson's bad lip-sync
(It's a .wmv file about 3 megs. in size - Hope the link works for y'all!)

Funny you should ask, I just read this:
Ashlee Simpson to Sing Live Again Tonight
Oct 25, 12:27 PM (ET)
By DAVID BAUDER
NEW YORK (AP) - Singer Ashlee Simpson gets another chance to sing live - perhaps - on national television Monday after walking off "Saturday Night Live" in a does-she-or-doesn't-she lip-synch moment.
Simpson is scheduled to perform in Las Vegas for NBC's "Radio Music Awards," scheduled to be televised at 9 p.m. ET.
The 19-year-old was the talk of the Internet after Saturday's show.
Her record company blamed a computer glitch and she blamed her band, which cut off her planned performance of the song "Autobiography" on the network comedy show.
Simpson had performed her hit single "Pieces of Me" without incident earlier in the show. When she came back a second time, her band started playing and the first lines of her singing "Pieces of Me" could be heard again.
She was holding her microphone at her waist at the time. Simpson looked momentarily confused as the band plowed ahead with the song and the vocal was quickly silenced.
Simpson made some exaggerated hopping dance moves, then walked off the stage 35 seconds into the performance. NBC quickly cut to a commercial.
"What can I say?" guest host Jude Law said with Simpson standing next to him at the end of the show. "Live TV."
"Exactly," Simpson said. "I feel so bad. My band started playing the wrong song. I didn't know what to do so I thought I'd do a hoe-down."
Her record company, Geffen Records, said that instead of some pretaped electronic percussion, the recording of "Pieces of Me" started.
But it sounded suspiciously like a guide vocal that's a common - although almost always unspoken - concert aid. Either the singer "lip synchs" by mouthing words to a backing tape or has a live microphone and sings along to the tape, making the voice sound more powerful than it is.
Simpson's walk-off joins the lore of other unexpected music moments on "SNL": Elvis Costello stopping and changing songs on live TV, and Sinead O'Connor tearing up a picture of the pope.

bah, if you can sing, is it so hard to start halways into the verse or something if it is the wrong song?
and when you want to make a little popstarpuppet, why not just use someone that can sing in teh first place?
actually, i heard something about the simpsons father being the "mastermind" behind his little brats careers.. anyone know something about that?

Chris, I think you asked in recent "Question OTW" about the best advice someone ever gave us. I missed answering then, but it fits in here!
I was in my teens, sitting around the house and just running through a few tunes on my acoustic guitar. I was playing one song (don't remember which one) until I came to the spot where I didn't know the rest of the lyrics. So I stopped.
My dad, sitting in the next room, asked "Why did you stop playing?"
I told him I forgot the words.
He said "You should keep on playing anyway, nobody would know the difference.".
Our dad couldn't carry a tune even if he had a wheelbarrow, but he liked music. And that was the best advice about playing music that I've ever received. "Just keep going anyway." Make up words and add music if ya have to, hahaha!
Like what AR would call "committed to unconscious competence", I believe.
But I'm thinking when we're talkin' about the Simpson girls, there's probably not much conscious competence to work with there.

Dude...to be fair, that wasn't bad at all for a live, unedited piece with just a guitar accompaniment.
Seriously.
What she did on SNL sucked balls though, hahahahahah.

You know, at first I thought her dancing was kinda goofy.
But after seeing it a few times, I'm starting to like it. In a weird kinda way. It's funny.
