Mount St. Helens just erupted!!!

Yea, they said on the local news it was a steam eruption. Hopefully it will keep letting a little off at a time and dont destroy the land around it.

Well, the Internet is faster than the news!!!

Since this morning I left a browser window open with

the Mount St. Helens Webcam.

Just a few minutes ago the pic updated and this was to see!

Maybe only a "hicup" again, but it's a volcano and a huge one!

Yeah, I've been checking out that cam for the last week, too, Mike. Cool how with webcams you can get a look at so many places around the world!

When Mt. St. Helens erupted in 1980, it blew off one side of the mountain and covered the whole area with a big layer of ash. But the nature, wildlife, trees, etc. have comeback very well since then.

I've got relatives 30 miles away...it's not looking good. Last eruption I had to dig my moms house and car out from under 6 inches of ash.....the remnants were around for years. That's alot of ash! :tongue

Mount St. Helens is located in southwest Washington

State, USA (46.20 N by 122.18 W) approximately a 3 hour

drive from Seattle, WA (90 miles) and a 2 and 1/2 hour drive

from Portland, OR (65 miles).

of extremely dangerous and explosive-type in the

so called cascade range reaching from north-west Canada

to south-west California.

I wouldn't live too close near a explosive volcano as long as

I could avoid it though!

It's the ultimate force of nature.

1995 the top of the volcano Soufrière on the Island of

Montserrat (West Indies) exploded which is way smaller

than Mt. St. Helens.

More than half of the island was devastated and

didn't recover until today. Here are some pics showing

this force:

(Houses not directly hit by pyroclastic waves or lava

were buried under tons and tons of ash)
