Oh MY! you hedonist you! Banana soy shakes? that sounds great. I love bananas. Unfortunately I can't have them - they seem to go straight from my mouth to other bits of me...well in that case, I probably shouldnt be eating mangoes either... heh

Well I just had fantastic indian style prawns with karela (bitter gourd) on the side and spinach too... then the mango. While watching Lost in Translation. It wasnt bad. dont know what the hoo-haa is about, it was ok, I got a bit bored. :dunno

I've never seen Buffy. This is the vampier slayer chick, no? Is that fun? I like Dark Angel, especially the boyfriend...

We didn't like Lost in Translation - we were so bored at the cinema... The girl in the movie has interesting lips. Like the girl in Dark Angel! hahahahaha

Yep Buffy is a vampire slayer - for some reason we got hooked in season 2 - and we've been watching season 6 or 7 - the one before the finale season - it's very entertaining when you know the characters - excellent one liners - one of the best shows I've seen on TV!! Of course we only ever watch pre-recorded shows so can skip all those nasty commercials!! hahahahaha :banana

Shaun's got 'Tech TV' on now and there's a soft-porn segment with a 42-inch Plasma TV built in the side of a jacuzzi?? Guess who wants one? :rollin

True, she has a very interesting face. Lovely. Trying to figure out why we got so bored with LIT when so many others loved it and it got an oscar an all... are we jaded over stereotyping of Asian cultures? was the conversation too slow and uninteresting? :dunno

Ah! That's interesting! I thought the conversation was slow and uninteresting!! I didn't feel it was so much the stereotyping as the lack of a solid storyline! I think it was probably popular in the West due to the 'Japanese' cinematography which when we have a large influence seems quite commonplace. It's been a long time since I've been so bored by a film and yeah - I was really surprised it won anything and was even mentioned!!!

I got bored with the translations, confusions between R and L (lip my stockings...), etc etc. There's just so much of a dead horse you can flog. Maybe at one time I'd have found it funny. heh.

Nothing really set me on fire... now wait for my next post! heh

Oh my god Debs! Maybe it's showing our 'maturity'?!?!? :rollin

Did you buy them from the Indian veggie restaurant in TST? Forgotten the name now but it's on Lock Rd. - they sell boxes of these mangoes for $80 per box. Very yummy too! I want one now too! ! wooooooooooohoooooooooo

PostPosted: Sun May 23, 2004 9:27 pm    Post subject: Mangoes! LIT? Casablanca? Buffy? Reply with quote

Debbie -

Mangoes are great - all fruits are great - esp. blueberries!

Being a confessed "contemporary cinema snob" I don't anything about LIT other than having ran into the title once or twice. So I looked at imdb.com (internet movie database) to read other folk's reviews and comments. Seems to run the usual gamut from "loved it-it's okay-hated it", as with any movie.

On the IMDB discussion board for LIT I found a link posted by someone who apparently was outraged about "racism" in the movie: lost-in-racism

Since I haven't seen the film, I'm not qualified to comment. And sometimes people are a bit touchy, seeing something that either isn't there or they may latch on to something that's not intended. So I dunno.

One reviewer there sez: "Lost in Translation" could best be described as "Casablanca" for the Generation X and Y groups."

Now that (Casablanca) is a mighty high standard for comparison in my book! I'm talkin' near-blasphemy when the comparison is made, hahaha! Everyone should view Casablanca and they'd know whutimean. The link Chris passed along for Reel Classics has a nice summary w/pics - Casablanca

It's interesting, in looking at the posters & pics there one imagines that Bogart probably wouldn't make as a leading man in contemporary cinema. (Brad Pitt as Achilles in "Troy"??? Bleecchhh! :ohno )

Was/is Buffy broadcast in HK or do you get the episodes on tape/DVD?

Tho I never got to be a real fan of it, I think the music director did an excellent job with his/her soundtrack picks, e.g. "Goodbye To You" M. Branch, "Nothing But You" Kim Ferron. The music was wellplaced and seamless, unlike some of the blatant promo tie-ins I've seen on misc. TV series.
