I just did this this evening – so its really a rough demo. I’m not really happy with the “Om Shanti” middle bit because of the slightly off-beat beat in the middle, maybe you can shift it around if I send you the vocals alone in wav so that it fits comfortably. I cant seem to get it right.

Lyrics

Vande Mataram! Vande Mataram!

Sujalam, suphalam, malayaja shitalam

Shasyashyamalam, Mataram!

Vande Mataram!

We are all born of one earth

Mataram

We are all children of one God

Mataram

Why can’t we live in peace

Shanti

And share one earth

Mataram

Om Shanti

Om Shanti

Mataram

We live on this earth

Shanti

Justice and love for all

Nidhi pyar

Vande Mataram! Vande Mataram!

Sujalam, suphalam, malayaja shitalam

Shasyashyamalam, Mataram!

One motherland

© English Lyrics and Melody Debbie Mannas, 2004, liberties taken with Sanskrit lyrics and melody… :D

A bit of history: Vande Mataram (Sanskrit) - the original song was an avidly patriotic song of India before independence, and Indians were actually banned from singing it by the British. The only bit I have used from the original is "Vande Mataram! Vande Mataram!

Sujalam, suphalam, malayaja shitalam

Shasyashyamalam, Mataram!

Vande Mataram!"

The song is actually an ode to mother earth and I have used it in this context. Any “patriotism” on my part is for the world, not any country…

Here's some more background and translation etc:

So, whadya think?

I don't think I'm violating any copyright here - the song was written back in 1882, and according to US/UK copyright law, anything published before 1923 is in the public domain. In India its for the life of the artist plus 60 years... Its very much like a hymn now in India, like Amazing Grace or something like that.

I just hope any other Indian hearing this will see the meaning behind it and won't be offended.

Debbie - I don't quite know how to put this....

...yes I do ...

I absolutely love it! :)

The only thing I would suggest would be to start the harmony "om shanti" bit a couple measures earlier (about 1:26), so the solo voice is over the weird drum break.

Yes, a wav of just the vox would be perfect. I'll set up a place for you to FTP it to.

You're awesome!

So..... when your track is finished, give me the chance to

do the final master, OK?

You don't have to take the outcome, only if you like it!

Deal? :me

How cool this is! :blush Theo! Mike! you guys need a big :kizz .

OK, but I recorded it sitting down, cause I had to mess with the controls, and its showing. I'll do a better version over the weekend and send you the wav if I can, or a better quality file.

Theo, that song just lent itself to an eastern sound, almost like you composed it with that in mind.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

It goes really well with Debbies' lyrics/vocals. Sounds so original and crisp. I love it!

It sounds a bit New Agey with the lines in English singing "We are all born of one Earth, Mother...."

The "Om Shanti" bit makes me think of Madonna's song - I can't remember the name of it but its on "Ray of Light" - she sings Om Shanti, Shanti Shanti - it's the chorus I believe. Debbie does Madonna - hahahahahahhaahhaha

Theo - I don't think I could make any Cantonese fit in - I'm not New Agey!!! I'm a ROCK chick! The only thing I could suggest is a rap instead of the "om shanti bit" ? Any other ideas? It would be fun to be on a song with Debbie!

How about a Cantonese rap over the Om Shanti?

*ahem* Madonna ahahahaha. ewwwwww, I don't listen to Madonna and dont have even one of her albums, cept for the movie Evita (ugh) and had no idea about her om shanti. Its actually a very very common indian meditative chant, esp during prayers or yoga. I was doing it long long before she ever heard of it ahahahaha. She must've grabbed it after her trip to india. I hear she's a yoga maniac now. Shanti simply means peace and ommmm is used to focus/concentrate. And the "nidhi" and "pyar" means justice and love.

Vande Mataram means I love mother (Mother Earth for me, Mother India for Chatterjee who wrote it).

Actually Canto rap over the om shanti would be cool - I'll have to make the vox louder so there's a balance there. Can you do translations for "mother" and "earth", "peace" "justice" and put it between the current phrases? There's plenty of space for other entire vocal phrases inbetween, whether singing or spoken (maybe spoken in a Martian kind of way...heavy effects heh).

Now if we had some German, Spanish, or other language... :gl
