Hong Kong abuzz over stray croc that can't be caught

HONG KONG -- The hunt is back on for a stray crocodile -- and local celebrity -- that gained fame by managing for months to elude capture by trap, dart and harpoon, foiling even the clutches of a wannabe ''Crocodile Dundee.''
Nicknamed ''Gucci,'' the saltwater croc has enthralled the people of Hong Kong, more accustomed to seeing such creatures on TV nature shows or the outside of handbags. Soon after the reptile showed up in November, radio callers elected it ''personality of the year.''
The reptile dropped out of sight for a while during the cold weather, but now it's back in the same polluted creek, lured by the warmer temperatures.
''It's the best time to capture it,'' predicted mainland Chinese crocodile expert He Zhanzhao.
He may have spoken too soon.
Each time someone has gotten close, the croc has plunged to safety in the murky waters of the rural Yuen Long district. It's walked in and out of traps, and even sunbathed on top of them.
Further embarrassing Hong Kong officials, the local news media have had plenty of luck capturing the crocodile -- on film. The wide-open jaws have appeared in every newspaper in town, encouraging people to flock to the countryside in hopes of a glimpse.
Hong Kong has no native crocodile species, and it's unclear where this one came from. Two theories: It's an abandoned pet, or an escapee from a mainland Chinese crocodile farm.
Though the croc is relatively small -- just 5 feet long -- Hong Kong officials worry it could be a threat to the public.
As for people living near the creek, they say a crocodile is no big deal. ''We aren't afraid of it,'' said Chan Kam-fai. ''Sometimes we even have pythons crawling into our house.'' AP
