Man Slices Own Head Off in Supermarket Suicide

May 7, 9:16 am ET

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (Reuters) - A South African man died trying to cut his own head off with a butcher's band saw in a major supermarket, police said on Wednesday.

Superintendent Jay Naicker said the Shoprite Checkers store in Richards Bay had been ready to close on Monday when the man wandered in and headed for the meat department. "He just walked in, went to the band saw machine and switched it on," Naicker told Reuters. "Apparently he knew what he was doing. He put his neck to the blade and it cut about half way through before he fell to the floor."

Naicker said the man, later identified as 31-year-old Emmanuel Gumbi, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He said police had turned up no motive for the suicide, which stunned staff and shoppers at the store in northern Kwazulu-Natal province.

Man Arrested with Severed Head Says Was Provoked

Wed May 7,10:59 AM ET

BERLIN (Reuters) - A man arrested after walking through town swinging the severed head of his sister-in-law by the hair told police she had provoked him, German prosecutors said on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old man admitted stabbing the woman to death and cutting off her head with a 12-inch kitchen knife after a row, a spokesman at the prosecutors' office in the western city of Aachen said. "The man said he had been provoked before the deed," the spokesman said, but gave no details.

Shocked passers-by had alerted police after seeing the wild-eyed man, carrying the head in one hand and a blood-stained knife in the other, walking through the streets of Uebach-Palenberg, a small town near Aachen.

One witness told the newspaper Bild: "He kept swinging the head by the hair, holding it up like a trophy and showing it to people. His eyes were wide open as though he was on drugs."

Police found his sister-in-law's headless body in his flat.

The prosecutors' office said police were investigating the man's mental state at the time of the attack.

Bild reported that the man was having an affair with his sister-in-law but she wanted to end it.

there'd be plenty of gory photos of severed heads and blood and knives etc etc.

They love sensationalism here. Every single day if there's any suicide or accident or anything, lots of blood n gore in the papers wherever possible. yuck.

There is a certain macabre dark humor to some of these sort of items. The line in the first story - "Apparently he knew what he was doing" - gave me the giggles for some reason.
