|
|
One of the finest music films ever was produced in 1978 by former Monty Python Eric Idle. With 'The Rutles - All You Need Is Cash' he had created a Beatles parody which was perfect down to the smallest detail. The live gigs, the movie scenes, and even the songs, everything appears authentic, although it is 'only' meticulous imitation and parody. Besides Mick Jagger and Paul Simon as interview partners, George
Harrison was also featured in a cameo role as a reporter.
Some 25 years later, Eric Idle has now finished a sequel under the title of 'Can't Buy Me Lunch'. The same reporter from part 1 does another documentation on the Rutles, only 25 years later. This time he interviews Salman Rushdie, Tom Hanks, James Taylor, David Bowie, and Bonnie Raitt on how the Rutles have influenced them and their lives. An extremely comical scene is the one where the reporter tries to interview
Madonna and Jennifer Lopez on the Rutles.
Rights to the movie lie with Warner, and they do not seem to be certain, if and how they ought to market this sequel. Let us hope they may wake up very soon and release that gem of a movie.
As Eric Idle has revealed in an interview, George Harrison has seen the film prior to his death and he was very much taken in by it.
