Hi everybody,
I have a new station at MP3.com which is getting very popular. Thought some of you might want to join it. It's called: What's your most popular song?
What has been your most successful song at MP3.com, and what was the most effective tool or method you have used to let people know about you music and start listening to your songs?
In my experience the best way to promote music on MP3c is to take a multi-lateral approach - it's unlikely one strategy will work all of the time.
CD Sales
result in high chart positions, more exposure, more P4P (if you are a PAS artist). And the listener has a permanent copy of your music out there in the real World.
Design a good station
- genre specific and ask for songs - chances are if somebody want's their song on your station they will listen to some of your stuff too. Get your station high in the charts if possible (easy for those with broadband!).
Mix genres
Some genres get much higher volumes of plays than others - so mix genres if possible (easy for some - not so easy for others) - watch the stats and you soon get to know which genres are getting the most listeners - (Classical attracts a very high play rate for example)
Answer all e-mails
from fans and artists alike - build relationships with your listeners and fans - that way they will probably come back for more.
Get a good NMA
to help promote and network
Use billboards
but don't SPAM and pester people - they just get annoyed. In the end if your music is good the listeners will find you - eventually.
PAS artists
get featured more often than non PAS artists (I believe) - The more detailed information you have with a song (story, lyrics etc..) the better chance you have of getting featured.
Keep your music page varied
and change it regularly - nobody reads last weeks newspaper - it's the same with web-sites..

Rob,
Thanks so much for the good tips! I know there are so many new (and some older) artists who really need the best help they can get in order to reach out with their music. What your write here will be helpful!
