Additional Aid Promised for Iraq





The German Armed Forces are ready to train additional Iraqi soldiers in the United Arab Emirates, according to Defense Minister Peter Struck. "If Iraq makes such a request to the German government, we are ready to fulfill these wishes", Struck said on a visit to troops in the Emirate Abu Dhabi. Since the beginning of April, about 50 German soldiers have been training 85 Iraqi security personnel in bridge, street, and house construction. Nineteen interpreters are supporting the German soldiers. The semiskilled Iraqis are in turn to finally train their compatriots to build up a 350 person strong pioneer battalion. Were laying the foundation for the training, Struck said. The two-month training is part of NATO efforts to rebuild the Iraqi armed forces.
