This is a pretty good site and I like Mikey's personal and pro-active touch, so we signed up. We'll give it a go for a year or so.

Mikey - I know what you're up against with the horrible industry hacks, the payola system and all that, but see what you can do about some REAL WORLD PROMOTION!! That's what we need, and if you can do some cost-effectively you can ask the bands with their own CDs to cut you in on sales. We would certainly go for that.

These pay-up-front American radio-play schemes are useless: you pay and they process you with the rest. Promotion only works when the promoter and the artist share the same interests, which makes the two parties work hard for each other.

Hi Steve.

Yep, real world promo is the key.

But I'm not going to have anything to do with any kind of payola ..... like u say, it doesn't get anyone anywhere.

Live events would be good promo.

Probably the best promo, as it means interaction with real people.... and real prospective CD buyrs.

Over the next few months, I'll be organizing gigs and events.....probably in my own locality (Brighton area) at first, but then spreading across the country.

We'll also be advertising in NME and other good music magazines and we're going to be trying to get in the "back doors" of radio stations, etc.

I think that other sites have failed because they seem to believe that all the music buyers in the world have intrnet access..... personally, I think it could be as low as 20% of music buyers have net access.

We're going to pull out all the stops and get out into the real world and reach that other 80%. :)

Mikey, does Getmemusic.com have a formal business "mission statement"?

Hi Drooly.

If you mean a page on the site that describes all the formal details about exactly what the buisiness model of Getmemusic is, then, no...currently it hasn't. ......maybe it should.

Basically, the main business plan of GMM is the promo of artists on and offline, with the MAIN focus on SELLING MUSIC, ......getting artists known by way of distributing "hard copy" CDs of their music, whether it be through our own CD Programme or by linking their own CDs to their Portfolios (artist pages) on Getmemusic.

There are too many "music sites" out there that simply offer musicians "artist pages" and not a lot else.

Getmemusic is evolving into a CD store as well as a music site.

There is some basic info about what we are trying to do at GMM in the About This Site section, although it does need updating.

Mike.

Now you're talking, that's what I want to hear! That's the spirit!!!!

PS, I've got a vague feeling I've already told you this, but we did a survey that confirms your 20% figure, and suggests that it's even lower for the over-30s.

Hi Steve.

Yep...got your email about your survey.

Very interesting, especially the part about many customers saying that your album ranks as one of their favourite albums.

Actually, it could even be less that 20% , which is why realworld promo is the only way forward. :)

BTW.... once this CD Programme realy takes off, I'll then look into registering for barcodes, so that retail distribution can be implemented.

:)

Mikey, by "mission statement" I meant a brief synopsis of what the purpose of the enterprise is.

You summed it up quite well with this.....:

Quote:

I think it would be cool if you made that one of the first things people see upon visiting your page.... - it would help folks to immediately understand what GMM is all about.

Just a suggestion.....

I think you have a good thing in the works there, btw....

Chris, I've synopsized this to distil out the main points, but here it is. I did it by e-mail to 50 of our first customers. 84% were over 30, so the results can't be generalised to all age ranges:

Dissatisfied by music broadcast on mainstream radio: 76%

Would hearing more interesting music encourage you to buy more CDs?: 80% Yes

Where do you look for new music?

Radio and TV: 94%

Music Press: 30%

General Press: 58%

Internet: 18%

Word of Mouth: 24% (surprising - I thought more people would talk music with their friends)

If you walked into a record shop with £15 to spend, what would make you choose to buy new music rather than re-mastered favourites?:

Having heard it enough to know I really like it 100%

Friends recommending it: 32%

Other: 16%

Why do you not use the internet? Most popular answers:

Short of time

Full of crap

Low-speed connection

Kids hog it all the time

There ya go!! :dunno

... it is in a lot of ways.

I should have included 'do you have access to a computer and do you know how to use the internet?' - 100%

This indicates that targeted use might be considered even by the non-users or the infrequent users that tend not to browse. This means that your idea of promoting the site itself (convincing them it's a convenient and reliable means of getting what they want) along with the bands in the real world might be a good way forward.

The only real demographic problem is using the different media that cater for the under 30s and over 30s (if indeed that is the principal demographic division - I'm not sure).

My target audience is the Baby Boomers. In a report that I read in the Rolling Stone, my youngset son subscribes to it, the Baby Boomers are the largest percentagte of "actual" CD buyers on the Net. The pre-teens and teens have this notion that all music should be free and that Artists don't need to be paid. they should live on love alone. :bleh

".... the Baby Boomers are the largest percentagte of "actual" CD buyers on the Net."

That's true Phil, but BPI research that goes into this in a little more depth indicates that they tend to know what they're looking for when they use the net. They're not great browsers, which is why it's important to do some real-world promotion for the site itself and establish its name in the public concsiousness. But they do have a lot of disposable income - once you get them there, they'll spend.

Well, Steve's survey has certainly made me think.

Other music sites seem to think that their target audience is 100% online, which clearly isn't the case.

They fail to realise that, as previously stated in this thread, over 80% of CD buyers rely on other sources of media.

Which is why Getmemusic is going "out into the real world" to promote the site.

Flyers, magazine ads, etc, etc.....we're pulling out all the stops!

Here's a quick example:

The other night, I was in a bar and I overheard two people talking about how hard it was to find the kind of music they wanted to buy in record stores.

They were in their fourties, so, clearly, they didn't want a Britney Spears album.

Anyway, I found that they had access to a computer so, I promptly gave them a business card.

;)
