I ought to try to clear some of these PC issues up !! I've been talking to the oracle from in the other room.
Certainly a few years back there was a touch of PC confusion..... In my wifes school (nursery, but a state nursery) they sing Baa baa black sheep.
Thing is though. Whether we like it or not. We do live in a multicultural society, We always have in our country, except these days it's far more diverse ! Now the thing with a lot of nursery rythms, it's about metaphors ! Like.... Ring a ring a roses ! Kids love it (oops, we can't say kids anymore, they're children) but it's about children dying from the plague !!
Baa baa black sheep is constantly debated, as to whether it's a master and slave thing !! ??.... so you can see why it may be a little contentious. However, at this time as i say, they sing it in my wifes school.
Christmas parties are fine.... no problem at all !
The nativity is also fine......... now ! As these days they celebrate all different religeous occassions. Though you have to remember we have catholic schools, church of england schools and Muslim, Jewish and others, as well as what I guess you'd call secular ? state schools, which would be the type my wife teaches in.
Now these religeous funded state schools may have their own guidlines for celebrations. That is where, I believe, a lot of confusion re PC, comes from.
My thoughts are, if you want Carols at christmas, don't send your children to muslim or Jewish funded school. (not sure if we've got any Buddhist schools ? I'll look into that)
Just on a slightly humorous note. My wife, being forward and mordern thinking. Suggested, maybe in their inclusive thinking, secular state nursery school, that matbe they should celebrate some Pagan religeuos festivals........ (her brother follows the Pagan religeon) BIG NO NO THERE !! The headteacher, and two other teachers are devout Church of England !!
My wife laughed when she told me......... as she said you could actually see them recoil at the mere suggestion of paganism !! She only said it to wind them up
So you see.......... the oldest religeon from our part of the world (druids and the likes) is the one that causes most revulsion...... weird huh?
A blackboard is a Board that is black, and is therefor politically correct.
A golliwog is not. It was a derogetory term and image, used for all black people !! Mind you, I used to gleefully collect the little plaster figurines when I was young................. Obviously, I now have to carry a deep sense of guilt through my entire life...........
Regards

Nah... if it was the same everywhere, it would be a very boring planet..
I suppose if you could "pic and mix" it would be great.... lets make a perfect country....
I would take customer service from the USA and its petrol price..
the food from Thailand, Hong Kong and Italy..
The beer and engineering from Germany
The entertainment and casino's from Vegas
the wealth from Dubai
.......... erm, I will continue later, my breakfast is ready.. _________________ BUSINESS AS USUAL UK |

Absolutely Paul......... Boring as hell, and what I mean is, every country has it's bad points.
My youngest has a new friend. She's from the Congo. 16 years old, she is here with her brother 18, and sister 17. They have been given a flat, and funiture. The school paid for her prom dress, and for her to go on the old London bus that they'd hired.
Their entire family, and I do mean entire ! have been wiped out along with the other 5 million in the Congo because of tribal wars. We can't look after them all ! They're obviously the lucky ones. But if my family were wiped out, I'd hope there was enough compassion somewhere to support and look after my children.
I just live each day feeling fortunate and lucky to live in the part of the world I do.
But I'm definately with you on the Thai food........ mmmm yum
I could be tempted to move to Canada though
