Just because we name someone a 'terrorist' doesn't mean we can change the rules just for them. Many might call American troops 'terrorists' for our unprovoked attack on Iraq. If you believe that we should be able to use aggressive tactics on people we capture in war, then we should expect and accept tortuous activities against our own soldiers.
I don't know why people forget the simple adage of 'do unto others . . .', it's such a simple concept and essentially it all comes down to treating people in the same way you would like to be treated. And I don't know, it seems to me that the US has a great obligation to set the highest possible ethical standards of behavior in world affairs, it's the least we can do as 'the greatest nation in the world'.
