Don! That's a great story! So do you work in sports? I also think it's wonderful to experience cultures from the other side of the Earth. I was in awe of America and England the first time I visited these places :)

That thank you note sounds like it's a beautiful work of art to display in your home :)

It's pretty cheap in China so all you need to save up is your airfare! Esp. since you have the freighter offer - that's not an everyday thing :banana

Hi Chris,

Definitely have no involvement in sports, but, heavy involvement in community activities The world Special Olympics was a huge deal in our state, and, Luci and I were responsible for housing 2 different countries...The Peoples Republic of China, and, the Dominican Republic. We found homes for 7% of the visiting athletes that participated in the games.

It was a very rewarding experience. The surgeon general in China today, was a lowly doctor back then, and, stayed at our house...he taught us how to make proper charcoal in our backyard fireplace. We taught him how to make Smores.

If you saw the closing ceremonies from that event on ABC TV...My wife Luci, was carrying the Chinese flag in the final march, as an honorary member of the Chinese delegation. She was part of the teams!

Hi Chris,

Got lots of photos from that event. On today's blog I mention that my son and I agreed it would be fun to post a photo gallery of old event pictures on our revamped web site. It will be a little while, but, I'll let you know when they're posted. That event took two years of our life to help produce, we got lots of memories!

Smores are an American tradition. I think it was started by the girls scouts organization. You need a roaring, outdoor campfire to make smores...that's step #1.

A smore is a full size Graham cracker base. You place a Hershey choclate bar on top of the graham cracker. Then you roast at least two marshmallows, on a stick, and, place it on top of the choclate bar. Top it off with another graham cracker.

The hot marsmallow melts the choclate, and, you wind up with a very messy treat! This isn't health food!

However, it's a fun way to entertain children outdoors at night. The rest of the Smores tradition is to all sing folk songs, while you toast the marshmallows, and, tell stories after eating them, until all the kids fall asleep. We sang the kiddy songs in 3 languages, at the same time...Music is universal...It was a blast!

We did this during the special Olympics with all the Chinese, Dominican, and American kids in our backyard. It was a wild cultural exchange, and, became a real highlight for almost 80 kids.

omg.

I've found the PERFECT menu!!!!!!

Chris's garlic potatos and Don's smores!!!!

yyyaaayyy - life is Good!!!

chris - "smores" is a play on words for "some more" .. as in "can I have smore?"....

It's a time-honoured North American Tradition...

Not good for the dental work, though...
