AMNINA LAWAL SET TO BE STONED ON 3RD JUNE

The Nigerian Supreme Court has upheld the death

sentence for AminaLawal, condemned for the crime of adultery on August 19th 2002, to be buried up to her neck and stoned to death. Her death was postponed so that she could continue to nurse her baby. Execution is now set for June 3rd.

If you haven't been following this case, you might like to know that Amina's baby is regarded as the 'evidence'

of her adultery. The father denied everything when he

realised the trouble he was in. To find out more about sharia law, see

www.guardian.co.uk/theiss...72,00.html

Amina's case is being handled by the Spanish branch of

Amnesty International, which is attempting to put

together enough signatures to make the Nigerian government

rescind the death sentence. A similar campaign saved another

Nigerian woman, Safiya, condemned in similar circumstances.

By March 4th the petition had amassed over 2,600,000

signatures.

It will only take you a few seconds to sign Amnesty's

online petition. Go to the web page:

www.amnistiaporsafiya.org/

Enter your first name in the space marked "nombre",

last name ("apellidos"), county ("provincia"), country, and

In the drop down box pick Reino Unido (United Kingdom).

Then click on "Seguir" and go to the second page. There you

have the option of entering your email address if you wish

to receive follow-up information. In any case, be sure to

click on "aceptar" to have your name added to the petition

list.

Please help to save a life!

A close friend of mine whom I went to school with became a Civil Engineer, and was later awarded a HUGE 1-year contract in Saudi Arabia.

By the time the contract was up for renewal, both he and his wife (also a childhood friend) were so utterly disgusted with the treatment of women there, that they turned down an offer worth several hundred thousand dollars.

They just couldn't stomach it.....

One story sticks in my mind: In his first week in Saudi (this must be about 5-7 years ago), my friend was staying in a hotel overlooking the town square. He woke one morning to a huge commotion and looked out of his window. There was a massive crowd gathered there. And he saw his first beheading.

He got the story later. Apparently a couple and their infant child (from Africa) were visiting and their child poo-ed. So they found a newspaper and put their child on it on a bench to change it. I believe they also wiped the child with the newspaper or something. Anyhow, turns out that the newspaper they used had the name of Allah and some religious article on that bit. Somebody reported them, and they were arrested. The authorities said that what they did was a beheadable office, and one of the parents had to die. The husband volunteered.

And my aunt and uncle worked in Libya (both docs). They said that Gaddafi regularly had hangings, amputations, beheadings, etc etc shown on national television.

Makes you sick, doesn't it? Makes you wonder why some countries get away with this @#%$ and others get invaded.

I believe that in Pakistan if a woman is raped, she needs two male witnesses to testify to that effect (hahahahahahahaha). Otherwise she is tried for adultery.

I think the atrocities Israel is committing are pretty damn bad too.

Mogabe is committing ALL KINDS of atrocities in Zimbabwe.

Where is the justice?

Christ, Debbie...

That hurts...

Gotta do something...can't ignore this kind of thing.

While we need to live our own lives, and be a positive influence on humanity, we must NOT ignore things like that.

But how can you stop such evil, without becoming violent?

There has to be a way...........

well it was either him or the wife. I suppose he did what he felt was best for the child.

Lawyers?? I suppose they have lawyers specialising in the practice of Islamic law. But if it was proven that you wiped your baby's butt with the face/name of the Prophet, I guess you don't stand much chance...

I mean, they put out a death sentence "fatwa" against Salman Rushdie cause they said his "Satanic Verses" insulted the Prophet. The guy had to go into hiding cause he would've been killed by any zealot obeying the edict.

"I inform the proud Muslim people of the world that the author of the Satanic Verses book which is against Islam, the Prophet and the Koran, and all involved in its publication who were aware of its content, are sentenced to death."

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini

FATWA issued February, 1989

Has anyone read Satanic Verses? If I remember rightly the book was banned in India cause of Muslim protests. I haven't, I've read other Rushdie books and found some of em too deliberately wordy and somewhat pretentious.

eeeeeeee later.

I am of the opinion that religious fanatism is the tool which greedy power hungry leaders use to keep people in control, while thwarting their oponents. This is all coldly calculated in a most unreligious fashion, and situations are even faked to fuel this sentiment within the masses. Even in the most liberal of societies. The current situation in the US is a good case in point. Most thinking people are not buying that, as they see through all the flaws in their leaders arguments and activities. But then the majority of people are followers, not thinkers. Its too much trouble to demand proper proof, its much easier to play follow the leader than be vilified for your different views. And once folks get steeped in their ways, they will deny anything that will upset their world view - this will cause too much anguish and is better left untouched.

And if this is the current state of affairs in developed nations, you can't expect very much better from the third world.

or can you???

hemmm hawww. Well thats my view anyway.
