Tsunami death toll tops 116,000

The death toll from Sunday's tsunamis jumped sharply today to over 116,000 after Indonesia reported nearly 80,000 people were killed in that country alone. Emergency workers said that in some parts of Indonesia's Aceh province as many as one in four people are dead.

It's a terrible disaster and I think the diseases are bound to arise with even more fatalities in the weeks ahead. My sons friend's grandfather has a plantation in Sri Lanka, no word from him yet.

Thanks Droolymutt, I passed over what you said to Werner and his family.

Here are two pictures which show how CLUELESS the tourists were, facing the first Tsunami wave.................

These people had no chance.

Mike,

Please tell Werner he and his family are in my thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time. I can't even imagine what they are going through right now.

Good to know that there are also miracles to report, like the baby from Russia which was found yesterday offshore lying and surviving on a air mattress near a beach in Phuket/Thailand.

A few miles up north from the same location new dead tourist bodies were found:

In Indonesia the power of nature and the destruction is beyond any experience:

The Tsunamis obviously had different 'faces' in the struck regions, depending on the angle and the type of beach/shore.

In Thailand the Tsunamis came rather like 'small' waves, but with incredible speed and impact incl. unbelievable high rising water with some delay (like in a bathtub) creating extreme currents nearly nobody was able to escape.

Have you seen this small video?

There you get an idea about how powerful and 'biblical' the flooding was in Indonesia.

Incredible pictures Mike!

I found this site which has a lot of info on the physics of a tsunami...

tsunami info

in which I read that "In the Pacific Ocean, where the typical water depth is about 4000 m, a tsunami travels at about 200 m/s, or over 700 km/hr." That explains the devastation. How could anyone escape such a force of nature? Absolutely horrific!

In the Indonesian city Lhok Nga, 20 kilometers north of Banda Aceh, today more than 5,000 dead bodies were discovered.

In the local river, uncountable numbers of additional dead bodies are floating.

Australia and New-Zealand stopped public life for one minute of silence.
